maanian7Hello everyone, I am currently planning the construction of a DIY kitchen based on the Ikea Metod system and have already selected some basic components. However, I am unsure which additional elements are particularly suitable for optimally expanding functionality and storage space. I am especially interested in practical pull-outs, interior organizers, corner solutions, or special storage systems that have proven effective and are compatible with Metod. In your experience, which Ikea Metod add-on elements are popular and useful for building a kitchen yourself? Are there any tips for lesser-known but helpful accessories? I look forward to well-founded recommendations with explanations so I can find the most thoughtful solution possible.
To complement the Metod system, the VARIERA components are especially popular. Their modular compartments provide clear organization within drawers and cabinets. Particularly useful are:
- VARIERA cutlery trays for organizing cutlery and kitchen utensils
- VARIERA waste separation systems for sorting trash, which can be integrated directly into Metod base cabinets
- Pull-out corner units and LeMans corner cabinets for more efficient storage in corner spaces, making use of otherwise wasted areas
Additionally, baseboard pull-outs offer extra storage for bottles and other narrow items. I recommend checking the exact dimensions of the kitchen modules before ordering, as compatibility with specific additional components may vary.

I would like to add some points: Especially for interior organization, many DIY enthusiasts rely on the VARIERA multipurpose trays, which can be used flexibly to separate smaller items in drawers. Drawer dividers are also very useful for storing large pots or baking sheets in a space-saving way.
An often overlooked aspect is the integration of lighting elements, such as LED strips, which can be attached to Metod units and greatly improve visibility.
Additionally, I recommend using countertop adapters and shelf inserts to allow for flexible use within cabinets, especially with unusually tall or deep units.

The VARIERA drawer inserts were especially helpful for me because I need a lot of organization, and they make optimal use of the available space.
Also: I repurposed a shoe cabinet plinth as a base for a bottle pull-out—not exactly a standard IKEA solution, but very practical for me.
Lotizar schrieb:The corner cabinets were also a real game changer for me since otherwise you often have an unused cavity. However, I initially had some difficulties with the installation because the instructions were a bit unclear. It’s definitely worth taking your time and possibly watching online tutorials.

An important addition to the previously mentioned extra elements are the internal hanging fixtures within the Metod system for waste bins and cleaning tools. These are often located on the inside of the base cabinet doors and save significantly more space than a separate waste drawer. Anyone valuing simplicity and a clean appearance should consider this option.
Additionally, I recommend selecting the handles for doors and drawers early on, as these accessories also affect the usability of the kitchen. Ikea offers various handle strips and knobs that can be installed without drilling—especially relevant for rental properties.
