Dear forum members,

I am currently having a wooden garden shed built in my backyard, where I occasionally want to exercise on my recliner bike. Now the question arises about the right heating solution. The garden shed has a volume of 30 sqm (323 sq ft), with a floor area of about 12 sqm (129 sq ft). It is moderately insulated. Electrical connection is available.

Goal: I want to keep the garden shed at a constant indoor temperature of 5-10 degrees Celsius (41-50 degrees Fahrenheit) during winter. If the temperature drops to -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit), frost protection should also be ensured. Wall mounting would be ideal.

What do you suggest I should do? I was thinking of a 1000W infrared heater or an electric convector. Can you recommend a model that you have had good experience with? I have a wide budget regarding price.

Best regards!

Nonsense! Haven’t heard that before.

A cheap blower like that should be enough.

Otherwise, a garden shed—what do you want to use it for in terms of frost protection?

Also, when cycling, you’ll get warm anyway.

Split air conditioner... Much better than direct electric heating. Also cools at 35°C (95°F).

Infrared heating is great if the garden shed has good insulation. Otherwise, it will be expensive to operate—unless you have a small wind turbine to complement it.

Simply use a fan heater with frost protection (this can be implemented via a plug-in adapter if necessary) to prevent the place from freezing. When you want to cycle, turn on the heater manually about 5 minutes beforehand. The bike will still be cold, but the surrounding air will warm up quickly as long as there is no strong draft.

A more energy-efficient option would be a heat pump or air conditioner that can also cool. The investment might be around 2000€.

In general, continuously heating a basic wooden structure is energetically inefficient and will result in considerable operating costs.

There are garden houses with proper insulation and “living quality.” In those cases, it’s worth investing in a good heating system. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a simple wooden shed. If it is, then a fan heater solution is probably the most practical.
What kind of garden house is it?
