Hello everyone,

The planned construction start for our approximately 160m² (1,722 sq ft) bungalow is scheduled for early 2013. We are currently still in the planning phase. Now the question arises: which heating system should we choose? Can you recommend anything?

I would like to move away from oil or gas heating systems. Technically, I am already convinced of pellet heating, but I would prefer to be independent. What alternatives are left then? Heat pump?

Best regards, EarlGrey

Hello Earl Grey,

which standard are you building to (statutory minimum requirement, Minergie, Minergie-A, Minergie-P)?

best regards

Independent from what? You are and always will be dependent on something!
The only real alternative would be a large photovoltaic system that covers the heat demand of the heat pump. But even then, you are dependent—on the sun and on the energy supplier if the photovoltaic system doesn’t produce enough energy during winter.

Hello K.Brodbeck,

I don’t fully understand everything you wrote... but we are definitely planning an energy-efficient construction method. From a low-energy house 55 up to a passive house. I believe that way we’ll be better than the legal minimum requirements for sure.

Hello Perlenmann,

we simply prefer to be independent from fossil fuels like oil or gas. The way these companies set their prices is quite strange, and who knows how things will look in 20 years. That’s why I say a pellet heating system would still be acceptable, since there is plenty of wood available here in Germany...

Is a large photovoltaic system still financially worthwhile to keep the heat pump running? After all, everything should stay within a reasonable budget...

You want to start building at the beginning of 2013 and still don’t know exactly what type of house you will build in September?
