Hello everyone,

we are renovating a house built in 1986. The entire ground floor has yellow/beige Jura marble flooring, which will remain since the underfloor heating was installed as a floating system within it. However, we want to remove a wall to create an open plan living and kitchen area, so there will be a section of floor missing in the kitchen.

We now want to tile the kitchen (9m² (97 sq ft)). What kind of look would you choose? We are leaning towards gray tiles with a concrete appearance, but I’m unsure if that will match well. Also, the stairs going up are located opposite the kitchen and will need to be redone. Ideally, they should have the same tiles as the kitchen to avoid having too many different floor coverings, right?

I’ve attached a photo of the dining room – the wall on the right will be removed, and behind it is the kitchen where the floor would be tiled.

Do you have any ideas? I’m really struggling at the moment...

Empty room with beige tiled floor, hanging lampshade, window with curtains, and wooden furniture.

If you want to avoid the effort of installing baseboards but still achieve a similar effect, consider painting them with chalk paint.

Is that possible? That would be great!

Which countertop would you choose to go with white? Wood look or would gray also fit?

Get samples of different countertop surfaces and fronts, and compare them with your flooring under both artificial and natural daylight.

I just wanted to sincerely thank everyone who responded to me here! I’m wondering why we didn’t think of patching the floor ourselves. Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees.

It’s really great to receive such constructive advice here and to see so many people engaged.

Regarding the countertop, we will probably get some samples and then see whether gray concrete looks good or if a wood effect might be better.

Get several options to compare. We brought in various samples from the kitchen showroom and tile supplier, spread them out, and placed them around.

The kitchen is part of the open-plan living area and should remain understated, not becoming the focal point of the room.

Modern kitchen: white cabinets, wooden countertop, red wall; Elf on a swing hanging from ceiling light.
