Hello everyone, I am currently exploring the IKEA Platsa system and noticed that there are various pre-made carcass options that can be combined flexibly. I am particularly interested in which carcass sizes, shapes, and depths IKEA offers specifically to design built-in wardrobes and living solutions with a perfect fit.

Specifically: What standardized pre-made carcass options exist in the IKEA Platsa system? How do they differ in terms of height, width, depth, and material? Are there also different frame constructions or assembly-related details to consider? I would like to know the details to better align my planning with the available modules.

That’s a good, very specific question! I’ve looked into Platsa in detail since I recently planned a complete living room wall unit.

The currently available standard carcasses in Platsa basically come in the following heights:
- 128 cm (tall cabinet)
- 64 cm (base cabinet height)
- 38 cm (drawer unit or low sideboard)

Widths vary between 40 cm, 60 cm, and 80 cm. Depths are mostly either 35 cm or 60 cm, with the 60 cm depth generally reserved for higher-end versions or specific furniture types (e.g., tall cabinets).

In terms of materials, the carcasses are usually made from melamine-coated particleboard with ABS edging. They also differ in frame construction: some Platsa carcasses feature a light frame structure to better stabilize the fronts and to simplify the mounting of door and drawer fronts.

An important point: Platsa modules are designed to be combined with each other – the different heights coordinate well, which makes modular planning much easier.

One thing I noticed, and would like to hear more about, is whether anyone is familiar with versions that come with built-in plinths or feet? That could be interesting for installation and later use.

Absolutely, it’s great that you’ve worked it out so precisely.

At first, I was quite unsure about choosing the Platsa carcasses, especially regarding the depths. Sure, 35cm (14 inches) is nice and slim for narrow rooms, but I really wanted something stable with plenty of storage space. In the end, I settled on the 60cm (24 inches) depth and the 128cm (50 inches) high carcasses, because I needed a mid-height storage unit with doors for my living room.

What was personally important to me was the option to rearrange the carcasses later on – that’s why I found the fully modular system very appealing, especially since the widths are quite flexible (40, 60, and 80cm (16, 24, and 31 inches), as mentioned).

I used a plinth for mine, but it was added separately via a foot set that IKEA offers. The carcasses themselves have no built-in legs, which means you can vary the plinth height flexibly or place them directly on the floor. While this makes planning a bit more complex, it also offers more flexibility.

You should also keep in mind that assembly can require some patience due to the modular construction – having a second person helps to keep everything aligned properly.

To add: The Platsa carcasses are systematically optimized for the following dimensions:

- Heights: 38 cm (15 inches), 64 cm (25 inches), 128 cm (50 inches)
- Widths: 40 cm (16 inches), 60 cm (24 inches), 80 cm (31 inches)
- Depths: 35 cm (14 inches) and 60 cm (24 inches)

The range of carcass sizes allows for numerous combinations, from compact sideboards to tall cabinets.

Additionally, the carcasses can be offered without front and back panels, which can be useful for certain applications, such as room dividers.

The frame construction is an important technical feature: unlike other IKEA systems, Platsa relies heavily on a frame structure made of solid wood slats, which not only improves stability but also allows for higher load capacity. This is applied, for example, in the 60 cm (24 inch) deep versions, as larger furniture surfaces require increased rigidity.

Regarding materials: all carcasses have been tested for formaldehyde reduction and meet European standards. The surfaces are melamine-coated, ensuring a durable and easy-to-maintain finish.

If you have an assembly manual that includes the IKEA designation, it might help to identify the components precisely. You should also consider the combination with doors, drawers, and special parts (e.g., corner cabinets), as these can affect the overall dimensions.

If you need it for your planning, I can gladly provide a list of the individual carcass designations here.
