Hello everyone, I’m currently planning some DIY upgrades for my Ikea Hemnes furniture and wanted to ask the community: What types of do-it-yourself modifications or improvements work especially well with the classic Hemnes pieces? I’m particularly interested in ideas that emphasize the traditional Scandinavian style while enhancing the furniture’s functionality and appearance without losing its original character. Perhaps you have experience with custom paint finishes, new hardware, built-in lighting, shelf inserts, or creative handle designs? I look forward to your tips and suggestions, including examples of what has worked well or what might be less suitable.

Glass inserts are definitely an elegant way to give furniture a lighter feel.
Thank you, that sounds very convincing. I especially like frosted glass because it provides some privacy without appearing too heavy.

Even better if you add natural wood shelves inside, for example — that keeps everything harmonious and lively.
That sounds great too; natural wood as an accent surely creates beautiful contrasts with the white lacquer.

For implementation: Are self-adhesive natural wood panels or shelves durable enough in quality for cabinets, or is it better to go with professionally cut wood pieces?

Self-adhesive natural wood panels are convenient for light applications but are more suitable for decorative purposes. For load-bearing shelves, I recommend professionally cut solid wood or plywood, which can be precisely adjusted and painted. This improves durability and gives a higher-quality appearance overall.

Another idea: For drawers, you can also install glides or felt pads to make opening and closing quieter and smoother. A very small investment with a big impact, especially if you value quality and durability.

I stick to my point: Anyone who spends a lot of time modifying the furniture themselves loses what makes Ikea special – affordable, functional furniture with appealing design. Instead, it quickly becomes expensive and complicated. It’s better to buy accessories and practical home decor items and leave the furniture basically as it is.

But to each their own.

I would disagree with that, as DIY upgrades can increase durability and cater to individual needs, which is often more sustainable than replacement.

Moreover, the intention is not to radically change the furniture’s appearance but to make it more attractive and personal with small modifications.

Especially with Hemnes, small changes can make a big difference – for example, replacing the standard handles with ones made of leather or cork, which add a wonderful warmth to the look.

Alternatively, lining the shelves inside with wallpaper creates a great surprise effect when you open the cabinet. A little fun is allowed without ruining the furniture.
