Hello everyone,

I am planning to customize my IKEA Hemnes furniture to make it more unique and am looking for proven DIY techniques that work particularly well with this style. I am especially interested in methods that enhance both the appearance and functionality of the furniture without compromising the stability or materials of the Hemnes series.

Specifically: What techniques do you use—for example, when refinishing surfaces, modifying drawers or doors, or adding extra features? Are there any recommended practices for painting, hardware, or even special assembly tips?

I look forward to hearing about your experiences, warnings about common mistakes, and especially tips on how to achieve great results with minimal effort on DIY projects.

Thanks in advance!

Hey HANSJO,

your topic really motivates me to start working! When it comes to HEMNES furniture, I like to use a few simple techniques that make a big difference – and are quite fun too.

- First: Sanding the surface is worth gold. HEMNES has a painted surface that is very smooth. Using fine sandpaper (grit 220) adds texture and improves adhesion for painting or varnishing.

- Second: For painting, I often use chalk paint. It sticks well, dries quickly, and just looks great. Afterwards, I apply a wax layer to make the surface more durable.

- Third: Small changes, like replacing the handles with vintage knobs, make a huge impact – and are an instant eye-catcher.

Sometimes I also install LEDs in shelves, especially in display cabinets, which adds a particularly charming look.

Give it a try, it’s really enjoyable! 😊

Hello HANSJO,

to answer your question thoroughly, I would first like to understand which specific material modifications or usage expansions you are planning. Are you primarily interested in visual upgrades, functional additional features, or both?

In general, the HEMNES series is made of solid pine wood, which is relatively sturdy and easy to work with. However, the surface is thinly lacquered, which often poses the biggest challenge when working on it. My proven DIY techniques include:

- Surface preparation: Light sanding with fine sandpaper (grit 220 to 320) removes the glossy lacquer and creates a receptive surface for paint or stain. Be careful not to sand the edges too much, as this can cause the wood to wear faster there.

- Attaching additional elements: Using pre-drilled holes or re-drilling with a Forstner bit is recommended, especially when installing shelves or extra hinges. This helps prevent cracking.

- Repurposing drawers: Replacing the metal runners with higher-quality versions or installing soft-close dampers improves both running comfort and durability.

- Applying color: Water-based stains keep the wood grain visible, while chalk paints tend to seal the furniture and provide an opaque finish. It is always important to apply a sealant (varnish or wax) after drying.

Could you please specify whether you prefer mainly visual or mechanical adjustments? This will help me provide more targeted advice on materials, tools, and methods.

That’s an important point Wyatt raises. For purely aesthetic adjustments, I recommend (as with many wooden furniture pieces) mainly sanding and using suitable paints or stains. It is important to use environmentally friendly products that do not damage the wood.

For mechanical improvements, such as installing dampers or other fittings, I advise using high-quality, precisely fitting components to enhance functionality without compromising stability.

Additionally, I have had good experience using wood glue to reinforce joints in older or slightly wobbly furniture. Also, tightening screws again after some time significantly increases durability.

If it concerns the installation of interior fittings (e.g., organizers in drawers), flexible systems with clamp or magnetic fastenings are recommended to avoid permanently damaging the furniture.

Hello everyone,

I would like to contribute to the topic with a small DIY tutorial focusing specifically on the surface treatment of HEMNES furniture.

1. Preparation:
- Remove all handles and other metal parts.
- Lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper to roughen the protective layer. Avoid applying too much pressure to prevent damaging the wood.

2. Cleaning:
- Wipe off the dust with a damp cloth and let it dry thoroughly.

3. Priming (optional but recommended):
- Apply a thin layer of wood primer to improve paint adhesion.

4. Painting or coating:
- Use acrylic or chalk paint and apply several thin layers. Allow each layer to dry completely.

5. Sealing:
- After drying, seal the surface with wax or matte clear lacquer to increase durability.

6. Assembly:
- Replace or clean the handles and reattach them.

Common mistakes:
- Sanding too aggressively, causing edges to fray.
- Applying paint too thickly (which causes runs).

8. Tip:
- Test the paint and technique first on an inconspicuous area.

Good luck with your projects!
