Hello everyone,
I’m currently exploring which DIY projects work particularly well and make sense with IKEA Hemnes furniture. I’m especially interested in recommendations for modifications or conversions that go beyond simple painting or basic redecorating.
I’m thinking of projects that are both practical and offer real design value. Perhaps you have experience with altering dressers, beds, cabinets, or sideboards from the Hemnes range?
I’m also looking for tips and tricks regarding material quality, structural stability when modifying, and any tools or additional materials that have proven to be especially useful.
I would appreciate it if you could share your most successful DIY solutions and explain why they work so well with IKEA Hemnes furniture. Feel free to share projects even without much prior experience, as long as the results are convincing.
Thanks in advance for your contributions!

I understand that some people don’t want to make many changes to Hemnes furniture. For me, a small DIY project—transforming a Hemnes mirrored cabinet into a small wall cabinet with removable shelves—made a big difference.
It helped create more order in the bathroom without much effort or damage to the furniture. And it’s perfectly fine to celebrate that small success, even if you’re not a natural handyman!

small DIY project, namely converting a Hemnes mirrored cabinet into a small wall cabinetExactly that! Small changes, like adding extra shelves or changing door handles, often make more of a difference in everyday life than major renovations.
What has worked very well for me is using a Hemnes bed frame with an additional slatted frame and extra storage space under the bed. This way, you get storage without major modifications, and the stability is not compromised.
A clean finish can be achieved with wood oil or wood stain.

These kinds of DIY projects are smart because they combine function and eye-catching design. Especially for the bed – where you spend a lot of time anyway. Style meets practicality, making the DIY experience twice as enjoyable.
