bokinHello everyone,
I’m currently exploring which DIY projects work particularly well and make sense with IKEA Hemnes furniture. I’m especially interested in recommendations for modifications or conversions that go beyond simple painting or basic redecorating.
I’m thinking of projects that are both practical and offer real design value. Perhaps you have experience with altering dressers, beds, cabinets, or sideboards from the Hemnes range?
I’m also looking for tips and tricks regarding material quality, structural stability when modifying, and any tools or additional materials that have proven to be especially useful.
I would appreciate it if you could share your most successful DIY solutions and explain why they work so well with IKEA Hemnes furniture. Feel free to share projects even without much prior experience, as long as the results are convincing.
Thanks in advance for your contributions!

Good morning! 😄
When it comes to DIY with Hemnes, I’m a big fan of transforming dressers into stylish nightstands. For example: remove a drawer, fill the interior with small baskets – done!
It’s not rocket science, but it gives the room a charming homemade feel and is really fun. Oh, and the natural wood look also hides small mistakes when sanding or painting – perfect for your first DIY project!

Just a small thought: Does it always have to be so hip and fancy? Hemnes is actually known for its clean design and solid construction. Altering such a classic often means losing the core character of the furniture.
Of course, customization is possible, but too many modifications can sometimes compromise functionality or resale value.
That’s true, but maybe Hemnes should sometimes just be left as it is?

I’m still especially interested in projects where a renovation clearly brings advantages—whether it’s more storage space, adapting to unique room layouts, or special design details you can’t get with standard furniture.
What changes made the biggest difference for you without completely ruining the furniture? Which small modifications can have a big impact?

REOHEINRIC15 Jun 2020 14:33From a structural perspective, the following DIY projects with IKEA Hemnes furniture are particularly recommended and technically feasible:
- Converting Hemnes dressers into benches with integrated storage: removing the drawers, creating a padded seat, and using the interior space with boxes.
- Extending Hemnes shelving units by adding adjustable shelves for greater flexibility.
- Updating the doors with modern handles to enhance the appearance with minimal effort.
Material quality: Hemnes furniture is mainly made of solid wood and real wood veneer, making it well suited for modifications using wood screws, dowels, and shelves. Tools such as a cordless drill, tape measure, and possibly a router make alterations much easier.
Be careful not to weaken load-bearing elements unnecessarily. Planning before starting the modification ensures good results.
