Hello everyone,

I am about to start building and have the following systems planned. However, I am not sure how to best implement them.

Heating: Viessmann Vitodens 300-W
Ventilation: Zehnder Q450
Air conditioning: Daikin Emura (living room + child’s bedroom 1 + child’s bedroom 2)
Door communication: Open, target setup: video + preferably fingerprint
Home cinema (on the living floor): motorized screen + motorized curtain

I would like to control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning via apps. Each manufacturer offers a separate app for this, which would be acceptable to me.

On the living floor, I want to control 4 blinds, at least 4 lighting zones, the motorized screen, and the motorized curtain via a touch panel. Ideally, this panel would be the same one used for door communication. I want to control all other floors conventionally.

How would you organize this?

Not for me: Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are interconnected systems, so in my opinion, there should be one unified control logic behind them.

I would generally entrust home automation to a PLC (programmable logic controller) and wire everything in a star topology with multi-core cables, using non-proprietary standards. Isolated solutions and a chaotic mix of incompatible bus systems have no place in a new build, in my opinion. The one thing that really drives me crazy is having a "fruit bowl" with seven remote controls on the coffee table.

I think so too, and even better if both systems can do everything, depending on the user’s authorization.

On one hand, your appetite grows as you eat. On the other, work, household chores, living, and sleeping all belong to the same people. So, in my opinion, it only makes sense if you can already start heating the bathroom while catching up on the news or let the morning sun shine on the breakfast table from the bedroom.

Which system would you recommend?

KNX is the only viable option for the future; everything else is either a toy or prone to high maintenance and faults.

As I mentioned, a programmable logic controller where you can manually program exactly what you want. If you're not really into this kind of thing, you might prefer an off-the-shelf solution. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but such systems are typically not designed for compatibility with other systems. In any case, I would always make sure to plan the wiring in a star topology and use multi-core cables: if you want to change the system later, re-terminating connectors is much easier than reopening walls because the new system needs one more conductor than the previous one. You can implement a star topology as a bus, but not the other way around (or it "costs" conductors).

If you decide to go with a "system," I would always prefer one supported by multiple manufacturers. A system tied to a single manufacturer that disappears will only cause trouble.

If, then definitely KNX
