Hello everyone, I am considering buying a Kallax shelving system from IKEA but am unsure which compartments are really recommended. There is quite a variety – from boxes, doors, and drawers to baskets. My main use is a combination of decorative display and practical storage for books, smaller electronic devices, and some files. I am therefore interested in which types of compartments are best suited for the long term to combine stable functionality, design, and flexibility. Are there any recommendations or experiences regarding which compartments are the most durable and easy to maintain? Thanks in advance for your insights!
Following the previous discussion, I would like to add: For the doors in the Kallax system, I recommend the version with a soft-close feature. This prevents unnecessary wear and door slamming, which is beneficial with frequent use. Additionally, when choosing the shelves, attention should be paid to the maximum load capacity, as it varies depending on the model and material. Overall, I suggest organizing the compartments based on weight and frequency of use to ensure optimal durability and user convenience.

Differentiating compartments by weight and frequency of useThat is an important point. Additionally, I recommend paying attention to the material and workmanship when selecting boxes. For example, thin felt boxes can warp with moisture or under heavy load. Plastic boxes need to be of high quality—low-grade products often develop small cracks or deformations quickly. Therefore, it is worthwhile to invest in good inserts. A combination of original accessories and suitable third-party products can help to optimally meet individual requirements.
Great, thanks for the many helpful tips! I think I’ll go for a combination of open shelves for books and decorative items, along with doors featuring a soft-close mechanism and sturdy plastic boxes for electronics. I’ve also come to understand that the stability of the shelves is an important factor, especially for the heavier books. If anyone has recommendations for specific models or sources, please share!

For heavier loads, you can also use sturdy plastic baskets from third-party suppliers that fit the Kallax dimensions. Doors are also available from IKEA as accessories and fit perfectly – soft-close is included in the edition. This sets you up well! 🙂

Soft-close is included directly in the edition. That is correct, but before purchasing, you should check whether the soft-close doors have the same thickness and mounting as the regular doors, as this will make later replacement or retrofitting easier.
