Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to furnish my apartment using the IKEA Platsa system with a wood-look finish and am wondering which colors would best complement the wood appearance. Since Platsa features a rather warm, natural wood tone, I want to avoid making the overall design either too dull or too chaotic.
It’s important for me to find suitable wall colors as well as accent colors for cushions, curtains, or accessories — so not a wild color palette, but rather a harmonious, coordinated color scheme that highlights the wood finish in a flattering way.
I imagine that besides classic natural tones, some more modern or cooler colors might also work well, but I’m not entirely sure about that.
Does anyone have experience with IKEA Platsa wood-look and can recommend colors that both match the wood appearance and create a modern, fresh atmosphere? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello Nonpa,
great that you formulated this so precisely. Platsa in wood finish has a rather warm, slightly yellowish wood tone that pairs beautifully with various colors.
I would recommend considering the color selection in three categories:
- Wall colors: Light, neutral shades like cream, warm gray, or a very pale beige create a subtle base and allow the wood to stand out nicely. Avoid deep dark colors on large surfaces, as they might overpower the wood.
- Accent colors: Gray tones, muted mustard shades, or olive green work really well here. They provide a pleasant contrast and bring a natural freshness.
- Accessories/color highlights: You can use blue or teal tones if you prefer cooler colors. These colors harmonize nicely without disturbing the warm wood appearance.
A common mistake is using too many light wood accents at once – this reduces visual interest. It’s better to work with contrasting areas and colored accents.
Summary:
- Walls: Cream, light gray
- Accents: Mustard, olive
- Details: Teal, blue
This way you achieve a modern, harmonious overall look.

I would like to add that when combining with the Platsa wood finish, the amount of natural light in the room also plays an important role. In spaces with limited daylight, it is better to choose lighter color options to avoid making the room feel cramped.
Additionally, it makes sense to consider different materials alongside color – for example, a velvet curtain in a muted blue or gray can complement the wood very well while also adding texture.
I think it is important that the color palette does not become too colorful, but consists of a few well-coordinated tones. This best emphasizes the natural aesthetic of the wood finish.

A dark anthracite can also create great contrasts if used sparingly.Exactly, that’s an important point. Dark colors add contrast to a room and create “focal points.” I recommend using anthracite more selectively, for example on shelves or small pieces of furniture to highlight the wood look.

I would also say that warm tones like terracotta or a very soft orange go well with the Platsa wood look.I can only agree, as the warm base of the wood gains more depth this way. Just be careful to keep the orange very subtle; otherwise, it can quickly feel like the “1970s.”
Additionally, you should consider the light source: warm lighting emphasizes the wood look even more, while cool lighting can sometimes contradict the color choice.
