Hello everyone, I recently purchased some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series – specifically in white lacquered finish. As I’m setting up my space, I’m wondering: which wall colors or accessories complement Hemnes furniture well to make the room feel both harmonious and modern? I’m especially interested in how colors work together with the typical Scandinavian clear yet rustic design of the furniture. Are there any proven color combinations you would recommend, or particular shades that are better to avoid? It would also be helpful if you could briefly explain why certain colors pair well together. Thanks in advance for your tips!

For white Hemnes furniture, I generally recommend neutral to cool wall colors, such as a light gray or a very pale blue, to highlight the typical Nordic character. These tones create a calm atmosphere and complement the somewhat rustic yet modern style of the furniture. Alternatively, warm earth tones work well, especially if there are wooden accessories or textiles made from natural fibers in the room—muted beige or soft olive green can be effective here. Very bright or very dark colors should be avoided, as they often appear too harsh or unsettling when combined with white. Overall, the size of the room and the available light play an important role in the final choice of color.

I would like to question whether the Nordic style is really defined only by cool tones. Hemnes also has a certain traditional charm, which, in my opinion, can be well complemented by warm colors such as muted orange or terracotta shades. These colors add more coziness, while too many cool tones might make the room feel sterile.

Furthermore, we should not ignore the lighting conditions, which can be limited, especially in Nordic apartments. A pale blue works well only with sufficient light. Otherwise, it can make the space feel gloomy.

Therefore, my question is: How does this combination work in rather dark rooms when using white Hemnes furniture? Are there any practical recommendations?

For dark rooms: Choose light wall colors, such as warm cream or sandy tones. This creates a friendly atmosphere without feeling oppressive. Avoid strong contrasts with dark colors.

In addition to the previous posts: The Hemnes series, especially in white, works well with a combination of neutral base colors and targeted accent colors. A proven concept is the following color palette:

- Wall colors: Cream white, greige (a mix of gray and beige), or light gray
- Accents: Mustard yellow, blue-gray, or muted green (e.g., sage green)
- Textiles and accessories: Natural materials like linen and cotton in earth tones

This combination supports the Scandinavian aesthetic without making the space feel dull. It is also important not to use too many contrasting colors to preserve the calmness of the Hemnes furniture.

Regarding darkness: In rooms with limited natural light, I advise against using deep green or blue as wall colors, as these visually shrink the space. Instead, lighter, warm tones are more favorable.
