Hello everyone, I am currently planning to redesign my IKEA Besta furniture and am considering which colors would be best, not only in terms of appearance but especially regarding durability. I am particularly interested in which shades have proven to be reliable for long-term use, without the color fading quickly, chipping, or becoming unattractive. It would also be helpful if the colors are timeless and work well in typical living spaces, which usually feature mostly natural or subdued tones. Does anyone have experience with specific types of paint or suitable shades for Besta furniture that they would recommend? Are there differences between matte, glossy, or satin finishes concerning durability? I would appreciate detailed tips and advice on special coatings or paints that work well on the materials used (chipboard with melamine or foil coating). Thanks in advance!

Hello justine62, that is a very well phrased and clear question, thank you for that! Basically, for IKEA Besta furniture, which mostly consists of chipboard with melamine or foil surfaces, paints with high abrasion and scratch resistance are recommended.

- When choosing the paint, it makes a difference whether you want to repaint the original surface or redesign the furniture using a primer or sanding work.
- For durable results, acrylic or polyurethane paints are suitable because they are resistant and do not yellow quickly.
- For surfaces, a satin finish is preferable, as it makes fingerprints less visible than high gloss and is also somewhat more durable than matte.
- Light and rather neutral colors such as white, cream, gray, or muted wood tones remain timeless and fit well in many living environments.

If you like, I can later go into more detail about surface preparation, as this is an important factor for durability.

Hello everyone! I would like to add to the discussion: The material composition of Besta kitchen cabinets makes repainting a bit tricky, as the laminate or foil surfaces often can’t be simply painted over without issues with adhesion and durability later on.

- Therefore, I recommend starting with a special primer designed for painted or laminated surfaces to ensure proper paint adhesion.
- Water-based paints (acrylic paints) are better for DIY use, as they have low odor and emit fewer fumes.
- In the long term, subtle colors like shades of gray, anthracite, or sand tones are a good choice because they show less dirt and work well with a variety of interior styles.
- For surface preparation, be sure to sand thoroughly and degrease.

I completely agree, especially polyurethane makes the surface very robust, especially when applied with a roller and then sealed afterwards.

Hi justine62, I’ll organize some advice on how to choose and apply long-lasting paint for IKEA Besta furniture.

1. Check the material: Besta cabinets are usually made of particle board with melamine or foil coatings. Before painting, you must thoroughly clean them (e.g., with denatured alcohol) and then lightly sand the surface to ensure the paint adheres well.

2. Choose the type of paint:
- Polyurethane or two-component (2K) coatings offer the highest durability.
- Acrylic paints are more environmentally friendly and easier to apply but don’t last as long on furniture.

3. Color selection: It’s best to choose timeless and resilient colors, such as white, cream, shades of gray, dark wood tones, and possibly muted blue or forest green if the tone is subdued.

4. Finish: Satin finish is often the most practical, as it is less sensitive than matte but not as reflective as high gloss. High gloss tends to show scratches more quickly.

5. Sealing: A clear sealer significantly extends the lifespan by protecting against scratches and water stains.

In summary: thorough preparation, high-quality paints and pigments, subtle colors, and sealing are key to long-lasting results. Hope this helps!

Interesting thread! However, I would like to point out that the question "Which colors are durable and suitable for IKEA Besta furniture?" depends not only on the color choice but especially on the type of paint and coating system used.

- It makes a big difference whether you paint directly over foil laminates or if you sand the furniture beforehand and apply a primer for better adhesion.
- The way the furniture is used (households with children, pets, etc.) also affects how durable the paint can be.

I fully agree with that, but in my opinion, the choice of primer is crucial for durability, more so than the color itself.

Exactly, it’s better to invest extra effort here than to be disappointed later.

Color-wise, I recommend sticking to classic, timeless shades, but the real focus should be on proper surface preparation and sealing.

Great summary! 😉 I would add that when it comes to surfaces, a bit of color is also allowed to add some personality—feel free to use a muted teal or ochre if it suits your interior style.

Not just boring white or gray, but the paint should, of course, withstand everyday wear and tear—paints with plastic components or synthetic resin work really well for this.

By the way, a satin finish makes a lot more forgiving, even if scratches occur—they are less noticeable than on high-gloss surfaces.

In short: be bold with color, but paint smart!
