Hello everyone,

I am currently researching which colors and finishes of IKEA’s Pax systems are particularly low-maintenance. I am especially interested in everyday use in high-traffic areas such as bedrooms or hallways, where cabinets are frequently touched and may show fingerprints, dust, or scratches.

It is important for me to find a surface that is resistant to dirt and easy to clean with standard cleaning products, while also remaining visually durable without quickly becoming dull or stained. There is also the question of whether matte or glossy fronts offer advantages in this regard, and whether lighter or darker colors are easier to maintain—especially concerning dust or water spots.

Does anyone have practical experience with different Pax colors and finishes? Are there any special tips beyond the usual cleaning routines? I would appreciate concrete insights, including how the materials hold up in daily use.

From my experience, matte finishes on Pax units are actually easier to maintain than glossy fronts. Shiny surfaces show fingerprints and dust much more quickly, even when freshly cleaned.

Colors also play a role: dark, matte shades tend to hide dust and small stains better than very light options. However, with dark colors, you should be aware that scratches may be more visible, which can be a disadvantage in everyday use.

In general, I recommend cabinets and doors with a melamine resin-coated surface, as this is more resistant to moisture and cleaning agents. Usually, a damp microfiber cloth and a mild dish soap solution are sufficient. Harsh cleaners should be avoided to prevent damage to the surface.

That’s an interesting observation, but I would like to question how universally this applies. High-gloss surfaces can actually be quite easy to clean with the right cleaning products, especially if they have a protective coating. They also often offer greater resistance to scratches due to special paint finishes.

Here, I see the issue more in terms of visual perception: Dust on dark surfaces is noticeable at first glance, but greasy marks or water spots are often more visible on light colors. So, the question of which surface is easier to maintain cannot be answered without context—it depends on the type of dirt that occurs more frequently and the cleaning routines in place.

I would also be interested to hear if anyone has noticed differences in texture or surface sealants that additionally affect ease of maintenance.

I would like to organize my assessment of the ease of maintenance for Pax surfaces:

- Melamine resin coating: Very durable, water- and scratch-resistant, making it especially recommended for everyday use. It can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

- High-gloss fronts: Look stylish but usually require more care, as fingerprints and dust are very noticeable. Often, using special microfiber cloths without cleaners can help avoid streaks.

- Matte surfaces: Better at hiding small scratches and fingerprints, but dust tends to stick more, so regular dusting is necessary.

- Colors: Light fronts often show water spots and dirt residues more clearly, while dark ones tend to show dust. In households with children or pets, I would recommend medium or warm colors, as they best conceal dirt.

Summary: For a low-maintenance Pax, I suggest matte to satin matte surfaces with melamine resin coating and a medium color tone to combine all factors optimally. Cleaning should always be done gently to avoid unnecessary wear on the surface.
