Hello everyone,

I am planning to redesign my living room using IKEA Besta shelving systems. I want to create a modern atmosphere supported by suitable color combinations. My question is directed to those with practical experience or well-founded recommendations:

Which color combinations work well with IKEA Besta in modern living spaces? I am interested both in color shades for the furniture fronts and in combinations with wall colors, textiles, and decorations.

It is important to me that the color choices are not only aesthetically pleasing but also enhance the character and ambiance of modern interiors – ideally timeless, yet with an individual accent.

I look forward to your suggestions and tips, preferably with explanations of why certain combinations harmonize particularly well. Thank you in advance!

Basically, there are two key aspects to consider with IKEA Besta: the color design of the cabinet fronts and the surroundings, meaning the room colors and materials.

For modern living spaces, a limited color palette is often recommended for the furniture.

- White or matte fronts are very versatile and work well with almost any wall color.
- Dark shades like deep anthracite or black create a strong contrast and are especially effective in rooms with plenty of natural light.

When paired with wall colors, neutral tones such as warm gray, beige, or a light sand shade work very well to create a harmonious and calm atmosphere.

Accents can be added with textiles in muted tones like teal, moss green, or terracotta. Metallic elements in brass or brushed stainless steel also complement the modern look.

My tip: Always maintain a balance of contrasts to avoid overwhelming the character of the room.

The question of suitable color combinations for the IKEA Besta system is more complex than it might seem at first, as several factors come into play: lighting conditions, room size, existing furniture, and—very importantly—personal usage habits.

If you plan to combine fronts and carcasses individually, Besta offers the option to mix different colors and materials. This allows for a very flexible design approach, which I generally recommend. If you are aiming for modern living spaces, consider the following:

- Fronts with a matte finish (e.g., shades of gray or black) look sophisticated and pair well with wood textures, such as light oak or walnut, for example.
- For wall colors, variations of cool tones (blue, green) work well. The contrast with warm wood creates both tension and harmony.

From a technical standpoint, you should evaluate the lighting impact:

- Moderately lit surfaces can handle darker tones.
- Bright rooms can also accommodate fronts in stronger colors like dark blue or moss green.

A frequently overlooked tip: pay attention to the surface finish, as matte and glossy finishes produce very different effects on the perception of the room.

Could you share more about your room situation? That would help provide a more targeted answer.

Some time ago, I also redesigned my Besta system, and choosing the right colors kept me quite busy.

I can confirm that from personal experience – I combined white fronts with a light gray wall color. It creates a modern and airy feel without being sterile.

For me, earthy accent colors also helped a lot to add warmth to the room. Warm ochre or a deep rust red, for example on cushions or vases, create a cozy atmosphere.

What I found interesting: Don’t let the fear stop you from choosing a bolder color. Especially with Besta, you can easily swap individual fronts or add open elements to create space for eye-catching color accents.

A small tip from me: pay attention to the mood you want to create. Should it be more minimalist and calm, or lively and creative? Once you know that, it’s much easier to narrow down your color choices.

What are your ideas on this?
