Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several IKEA Besta furniture pieces for my living room and now want to make sure I clean the surfaces properly and gently to avoid scratches or wear. My question to the community is:

Which cleaning products are specifically suitable for IKEA Besta surfaces?

In particular, I am interested in:
- Whether there are special cleaning agents that protect the surface while effectively cleaning
- If household remedies like vinegar or citric acid are suitable or more likely to cause damage
- Recommendations on care routines and cleaning frequency

I have heard that the surfaces are usually made of melamine-coated particleboard or lacquered wood – are there any special instructions I should follow because of this? I would really appreciate well-founded tips and personal experiences to help keep my Besta furniture looking good for a long time.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Bamogo,

I understand your concern and am happy to help. IKEA BESTA furniture is mostly made with melamine-coated surfaces, which means they are fairly resistant to everyday dirt but can still be sensitive to harsh cleaners or strong chemicals.

My cleaning recommendations are:

- Use warm water with a mild, neutral detergent. This is usually enough to remove dust, fingerprints, and light stains.
- A soft, lint-free cloth (e.g., a microfiber cloth) is ideal to avoid scratches.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or strong solvents, as these can damage the surface.
- I would not recommend using vinegar or citric acid on melamine-coated surfaces, as they can make the finish appear dull or even damage it.

For stubborn stains, you can try a mild bathroom cleaner without abrasive particles. It is always important to test the cleaner first on an inconspicuous area.

Care tip: Regular wiping with a damp cloth is enough to remove dirt and keep the surface looking good for a long time.

I hope this helps!

I agree with this. Melamine resin coatings are sensitive to acidic cleaning agents, which can cause discoloration and permanent damage to the protective layer.

Based on my research and experience, the best products for IKEA BESTA surfaces are:

- Neutral, pH-balanced all-purpose cleaners
- Oil-based cleaners that do not contain alcohol or solvents
- Specialized furniture care products designed for melamine-coated surfaces

As a general rule, avoid aggressive cleaners such as ammonia, bleach, acetone, or nail polish remover.

Additionally, I recommend always wiping the surfaces with a dry cloth after cleaning with a damp cloth to prevent water spots.

In summary, conventional household cleaners with a neutral pH and a soft cloth are the best choice.

To complement the previous helpful advice, I would like to address some technical details and the best approach for cleaning IKEA BESTA surfaces:

The surfaces are mostly made of particleboard, sealed with a melamine resin layer or lacquer, depending on the model you have. This layer is resistant to moisture and everyday dirt, but it is not completely impervious.

- Since melamine surfaces are chemically synthetic resins, they are sensitive to solvents such as alcohol, acetone, and acidic cleaners. These substances can cause microcracks or dissolve the surface.
- Mechanically, avoid using abrasive sponges; instead, use soft microfiber cloths, as even small scratches become quickly visible.

Cleaning steps:

1. Remove coarse dust and dirt with a dry microfiber cloth.
2. Mix lukewarm water with no more than one drop of a neutral, mild dishwashing detergent.
3. Wipe the surface thoroughly but gently.
4. Follow up with clear water to remove any detergent residues.
5. Dry the surface with a lint-free cloth to prevent water spots.

If you accidentally have stains with greasy or sticky consistency, you can apply a drop of mild dishwashing concentrate directly on the microfiber cloth. However, never spray it directly onto the surface.

Finally, it is worth regularly checking for damage and protecting the furniture from sunlight if necessary, as UV radiation can alter the surface over time.

I find this question very helpful because specific cleaning challenges are often underestimated.

I also have BESTA furniture, and my main issue at first was that I carelessly treated stubborn stains with harsh cleaners — this partly dulled the surface, which I found quite unfortunate.

By now, I only use a mild dish soap and microfiber cloth method, and I’m much more satisfied with the results. I’ve also learned that cleaning stains more quickly, before they dry, works better.

For maintenance: I try to avoid placing the furniture in direct sunlight and also don’t put hot cups down without coasters, as that can leave unpleasant marks.

Has anyone had experience with special furniture care products or waxes? I’m unsure whether these might damage or benefit the melamine.
