Hello everyone,

I recently bought several white Kallax units from IKEA and naturally want to keep them clean and well-maintained. However, I am somewhat unsure which cleaning products are truly safe to use, as I have read that harsher cleaners can damage the surface or cause yellowing.

My question is: Which cleaning products are really safe and suitable for cleaning white Kallax units? Are there any specific products or home remedies that work well without damaging the material? And what should you generally keep in mind when cleaning to preserve the white surface as long as possible?

I would appreciate well-informed recommendations or personal experiences!

For cleaning white Kallax units, I recommend using only mild, pH-neutral cleaners. Harsh abrasives or solvents (such as alcohol or acetone) should be avoided because they can damage the melamine resin surface, causing fading or yellowing.

The best options are simple soapy water or special plastic cleaners. These should be applied with a soft cloth or sponge (non-scratching). Afterwards, always wipe with clean water and let dry thoroughly.

Household remedies like vinegar or citric acid should be approached with caution, as they may dull the surface. Also, be careful with microfiber cloths that have high abrasive properties.

In summary: use mild cleaners, no abrasives, no solvents.

I simply use warm water with a little dish soap. This way, cleaning is quick and effective. No harsh chemicals are necessary.

I can confirm this and would add that the surface of Kallax units is sensitive to mechanical and chemical stress due to the melamine resin coating. Therefore, when cleaning, it is important to pay attention not only to the cleaning agents but also to the method used.

I recommend the following detailed procedure:

1. First, clean with a damp, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust and loose dirt.

2. For heavier dirt, use a mild soap solution – dissolve 2–3 drops of pH-neutral dishwashing detergent in warm water.

3. Apply the cleaning solution with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth; never use abrasive sponges or stiff brushes.

4. After cleaning, thoroughly wipe with clear water and immediately dry with a dry cloth to prevent water marks and moisture spots.

5. Do not use aggressive cleaners, solvents, or bleach.

6. For stubborn stains such as felt-tip pen marks, you can try gently using an eraser or isopropanol (well diluted), but always test in an inconspicuous area first.

For general maintenance: It is recommended to dust the units regularly and clean spills immediately to avoid buildup and discoloration.

Can you provide more information about the type of stains or the usage context so that the advice can be more targeted? How severe are the stains?

Thank you for the detailed tips! The Kallax units are in my living room and are mainly used for books and decoration. Most of the time, it’s dust, fingerprints, and occasionally water splashes or spilled coffee rings. Fortunately, larger or heavily pigmented stains have not occurred so far.

I am looking for a long-term care routine that both protects the surface proactively and easily removes small, everyday dirt.

For lightly soiled white Kallax units, regular cleaning with a damp microfiber cloth combined with mild dish soap has proven effective. It is important to always wipe afterwards with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue, which can cause yellowing of the surface over time.

Also, avoid direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can slightly yellow the white finish. Another tip: for a gentle refresh of the color, a special plastic care product designed for the type of plastic can be used without damaging the surface.

Before applying such care products, always test compatibility on a hidden area. The combination of mild cleaning and careful maintenance noticeably extends the lifespan of the white surface.
