Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the maintenance of Malm surfaces, specifically Ikea furniture from the Malm series. Since these pieces are usually made of veneer or coated wood, I wonder which care products are truly ideal for preserving the surface in the best possible way.

I am interested in both cleaning and upkeep to prevent the furniture from drying out or getting damaged. Are there certain oils, waxes, or cleaning agents that are recommended? And is it better to use chemical or natural products?

It is particularly important for me to have gentle care that does not affect the grain or leave any unpleasant residues. Who has experience with this and can recommend products or methods?

Hello eliaske34,

your question is very well put and quite detailed – I like that. Malm furniture from Ikea is usually made of particleboard with a melamine or foil coating, sometimes with a thin veneer layer. Therefore, you should choose care products that are not too harsh and do not damage the foil surface.

For cleaning, I recommend a mild, pH-neutral detergent – preferably a dish soap diluted with plenty of water. This is usually enough to remove dust or light dirt.

For regular maintenance, I would avoid special furniture polishes if the furniture does not have a real wood surface but rather foil or melamine. These polishes can leave residues or make the surface glossy, which is not always desirable.

If your piece of furniture is veneered, special wood care oils or waxes are useful to nourish the wood and protect it from drying out. For this, beeswax or linseed oil, for example, are suitable. But even here, use sparingly and avoid overdoing it.

I hope this helps you for now! 🙂

For Malm surfaces with a foil finish, I just use a damp cloth, no oil or wax. For real wood, you need to use wood oil specifically.

To clearly outline the care instructions for Malm surfaces, I would like to briefly explain what to consider for the different types:

1. Melamine/foil layer:
These surfaces are very durable and stain-resistant. A damp microfiber cloth and mild soap are sufficient; do not use waxes or oils!

2. Real veneer:
A gentle, natural care oil or wax specifically designed for wood is recommended. This protects against drying out and preserves the grain pattern.

Common mistakes:
- Avoid using harsh cleaning agents (e.g., those containing ammonia)
- Do not use sprays or polishes on foil-covered panels, as they may become dull

Additionally, you should regularly dust the furniture and avoid direct sunlight to prevent discoloration.

My recommendation: If in doubt, it’s better to ask which exact surface your Malm furniture has. This way, you can choose the most suitable product. Hope this helps!

Thank you, Tommy38, for the explanation! That makes sense and helps clarify things a bit.

That is actually still an open question for me. The surfaces in the room seem to vary slightly.

So, to put it more precisely: Which care products do you specifically recommend for Malm dressers with melamine foil, especially regarding cleaning and preventive maintenance? And how does it differ for the less common versions with real veneer?

Are there any particular brands or products that have proven effective?

I would like to develop a care routine that I can use long-term without unintentionally damaging my furniture.

For melamine surfaces, I recommend simply avoiding cleaners that contain ammonia or alcohol. A mild dish soap diluted in water is more than sufficient.

For maintenance, you don’t need to apply anything extra on melamine, as the surface is very durable and does not absorb moisture. Instead, avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh scrubbing pads, as these can scratch the surface.

For veneer surfaces, on the other hand, apply oils such as a thin layer of hardwax oil. My tip: products from Osmo or Rubio Monocoat are very popular, but good beeswax also works well.

In summary: Melamine = mild cleaning + no additional care products needed, veneered surfaces = mild cleaning + light oil application.
