Hello everyone,
I am looking for a suitable cleaner for the surfaces of the Ikea Brimnes furniture series. These are mainly made of coated particleboard with a matte or slightly glossy laminate layer.
It is important to me that the cleaner is effective against everyday dirt, grease, and dust without damaging the surface or leaving permanent streaks. Since Ikea often uses special materials, I prefer not to use aggressive or abrasive products.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations for cleaners suitable for Brimnes surfaces? I am especially interested in:
- household products (brands, composition)
- home remedies that are gentle yet effective
- tips for proper use (e.g., dilution, contact time)
If anyone has had negative experiences (discoloration, damage), that would also be important to know in order to avoid it.
Thank you very much in advance for your help!

What are the toughest stains you encounter? Grease, coffee, ink?Thank you for all the information so far; this is exactly what I had in mind.
The most common stains I have are actually grease spots (from food), dust, and sometimes water splashes from plants. Ink or paint stains are rarer, but I also occasionally need to remove candle wax spots or sticky residue from labels.
Are there any special considerations when treating these specific stains with gentle cleaners? Or would it be better to use specialized products in such cases?
For grease stains, it is recommended to use a cleaner with a small amount of mild dish soap, as it dissolves grease more effectively.
For label residues and sticky substances, there are special citrus-based cleaning solutions available, which are usually gentler than acetone or alcohol. However, always test on an inconspicuous area first!
To remove candle wax, warm the wax briefly with a warm but not hot cloth until it softens, then gently wipe it off. Follow up with a mild cleaner.
When in doubt, avoid harsh solvents to prevent damage to the surface.

Candle wax: my tip is to harden the wax with an ice cube, then carefully scrape it off. This usually makes it easier! Afterwards, clean with warm water and dish soap.
Just as mentioned – avoid harsh chemicals. Stay gentle! 😉
In brief:
- Avoid: alcohol, bleach, acetone, abrasive cleaners
- Allowed: pH-neutral to mildly alkaline all-purpose cleaners, mild dishwashing liquid solutions
- Application: clean with a damp cloth, wipe again, then dry thoroughly
These are the commonly proven methods for Ikea Brimnes surfaces, which keep them intact and clean.
Plain water is often already excellent if dried thoroughly.

For specific stains, I recommend:
- Grease: mild dishwashing detergent, let it sit briefly
- Label residue: soak with a cloth and warm water beforehand; for stubborn residue, use a citrus-based cleaner, but only spot test first
- Candle wax: harden the wax (e.g., with ice), remove carefully, then clean as usual
Testing on an inconspicuous area helps avoid unwanted effects.
