Hello everyone, I’m looking for child-friendly safety measures for Ikea Besta furniture. Specifically, I want to know what options are available to secure these shelves and cabinets to prevent small children from getting injured or the furniture from tipping over. I’m interested in both technical solutions, such as wall anchoring, as well as additional protective items like corner guards or locks. Perhaps there are also experiences with certain Ikea original accessories or proven DIY solutions? I would appreciate detailed tips for the safe use of the BESTA series in homes with young children!

Hello MOTAR, I would recommend always starting by using the wall fasteners provided by Ikea. This is especially important for BESTA, as the furniture can easily tip over if children pull on it. Additionally, you can apply corner protectors on the sharp edges to prevent injuries. Another tip is to install child safety locks on drawers and doors, such as clamp or latch mechanisms. To summarize briefly:
- Always use wall fasteners
- Attach soft corner protectors
- Use child safety locks for doors and drawers
If you like, I can later provide more details about the installation or recommend specific models.

Hello, the simplest and most effective safety measure is to always screw BESTA furniture to the wall. Otherwise, it won’t be reliably secure. Additionally, there are affordable childproof locks that fit perfectly to seal the doors and drawers.

Hello MOTAR,

to go into a bit more detail: wall mounting is really essential, because otherwise the furniture can tip over when pulled on or climbed. For BESTA, there are special metal brackets recommended by Ikea – these should definitely be used. For corners and edges, both self-adhesive foam padding and flexible plastic corner protectors are suitable.

Another safe solution is child safety locks, which can be easily attached to doors and drawers. There are models with latches that also fit larger cabinets, which work well with BESTA.

If multiple cabinets stand side by side, they should additionally be connected to each other (probably with screws through pre-drilled holes) so that the entire unit is more stable.

I know parents who also use floor stoppers if cabinets have casters, so that children cannot move the furniture.

Finally, many also pay attention to child-safe handles or so-called handle protectors, which reduce the risk of fingers getting pinched.

I hope this covers the main points!

Thanks, that’s interesting, as I actually have the BESTA TV cabinet on casters. Could you share more about floor stoppers? Which types do you recommend, and what is the best way to attach them? Are there options that allow for easy removal in case the furniture needs to be moved later?

Oh yes, floor stoppers are really important if you have furniture on casters! 🙂 I simply placed rubber stoppers under the wheels at our place. They are easy to remove but prevent the furniture from rolling when kids hang on or push them. Make sure the stoppers fit the wheels properly, otherwise they might slip through 😄. You can usually also secure them with tape if needed. This way everything stays stable, but you can still move the furniture when you want. Stay safe, safety comes first!
