Hello,
For our new build basement, we are undecided between a structural height of 2.625 m or 2.755 m (8 ft 7 in or 9 ft) . For the floor construction of our KfW 70 house, we need 19 cm (7.5 inches). This means the ceiling height would be about 2.44 m or 2.57 m (8 ft or 8 ft 5 in) without floor covering (tiles / vinyl).
I find 2.44 m (8 ft) a bit low since we will have an open kitchen (living/dining area 33 m² (355 sq ft) and kitchen 10 m² (108 sq ft)). In our current apartment, the ceiling height is 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in).
With the higher option, the staircase to the upper floor would need 15 slightly narrower steps instead of 14. The increase would cost us around 1,400 euros.
It seems many people today face this issue due to the higher floor construction (insulation). We are torn.
What ceiling height do most home builders choose nowadays?

However, I chose a lower ceiling height because otherwise the rooms on the upper floor would be correspondingly lower (or the roof slope would start earlier), since the eaves height was fixed.
Our living room is 43m² (462 sq ft) with a directly adjacent kitchen connected by a large opening. I don’t feel any sense of the ceiling closing in on me.
But you have to decide for yourself.

TylerDurden11 Jan 2013 11:58We chose a rough structural height of 2.75m (9 feet), with interior doors at 2.11m (7 feet). I would definitely do it that way again, but it might also be because I am just under 2m (6 feet 7 inches) tall and didn’t want to constantly watch out for ceiling lamps when stretching.
