Hello everyone,

I recently assembled my IKEA Besta furniture and want to protect it as well as possible to keep it looking good for a long time. However, I’m unsure which care products or methods offer the best protection for this type of furniture. The surfaces are usually melamine-coated or painted, and I know that using the wrong products can damage the finish.

My question to you:

Based on your experience, which care products (e.g., special furniture care products, waxes, oils, or spray sealants) are best suited to provide durable protection against scratches, stains, and wear for IKEA Besta furniture?

I’m interested in practical tips that are both effective and easy to apply. Recommendations on products to avoid are also welcome.

Thanks in advance for sharing your combined experience and suggestions!

Hey gautyson, great question! 🙂 I have some Besta units myself and I think when it comes to care, it’s important not to overload the surface.

I usually use a mild, water-based furniture care spray that doesn’t change the shine and isn’t sticky. It works really well against dust and minor grease spots. It’s also important not to use oil-based products, as they can quickly make the surfaces dull or even spotty!

All I can say is: it depends on the product. I’ve had good experiences with products from brands specifically made for melamine-coated furniture.

And if you’re looking for some kind of scratch protection: a thin layer of furniture wax can help to some extent, but I’d rather avoid it on Besta surfaces because the wax layer can become sticky.

Just clean regularly, and your furniture will stay in great condition for longer! Good luck!

To answer the question systematically, here are some facts regarding the care of IKEA Besta furniture:

- The surfaces are usually melamine resin-coated or painted.
- Melamine surfaces are sensitive to greasy or oil-based cleaning products.
- Cleaners should be pH-neutral to avoid damaging the surface.

For long-lasting protection, I recommend exclusively
- mild, water-based furniture cleaning sprays without silicones or oils
- occasionally, a special furniture polish protective film (without wax), suitable for melamine-coated surfaces

To prevent damage:
- Do not use waxes, oils, or sprays containing solvents
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or scratching cleaning tools

In general, care products should not leave any visible residue and should keep the surface breathable to ensure long-term protection against scratches, stains, and wear.

Therefore, the selection should strongly rely on product information regarding material compatibility.

Hello gautyson,

I fully agree with SUBEN60 but would like to add the following:

Since IKEA Besta furniture is mostly made from melamine-coated boards, they are generally quite resistant to scratches but less so to harsh cleaning agents. Therefore, the goal of maintenance is to preserve the surface without causing additional damage.

- Regular wiping with a soft, slightly damp cloth is especially recommended.
- For more stubborn dirt (e.g., fingerprints, grease), a mild dishwashing detergent diluted in water works well.
- Furniture care sprays specifically labeled for “melamine-coated furniture” can be used occasionally to create a light protective film.

I do not recommend wax or oil-based products, as these do not absorb into the material and often leave residues that attract dust or become sticky.

In conclusion: if you want to be on the safe side, invest in gentle cleaning products and avoid aggressive or heavily film-forming care products.

If you like, I can also suggest some specific product recommendations.
