litefaHello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture made of pine wood and want to take the best possible care of it so that the surface stays beautiful for a long time and the wood does not get damaged. I am particularly interested in which care products are best suited to protect the surface, repel moisture, and minimize typical signs of wear such as scratches or discoloration. What experiences have you had with oils, waxes, or special wood care products for Hemnes furniture? Are there any brands or ingredients that you would especially recommend, and how often should maintenance ideally be done? I look forward to detailed responses so I can treat my furniture in the best way.
For the care of IKEA Hemnes furniture made of untreated pine wood, I generally recommend products based on natural oils, as these penetrate deeply into the pores and simultaneously nourish and protect the wood. Specifically, linseed oil or tung oil is well suited. It soaks into the wood, hardens there, and thus provides good moisture protection. Alternatively, a wood care spray containing wax is recommended, which forms a protective layer on the surface. It is important to keep the surface clean and dry before application and to thoroughly remove any excess product to avoid film formation. Regular re-oiling, depending on usage, about twice a year, is advised. Chemically aggressive products should be avoided, as they can damage the wood.
In addition to Lorukeo’s recommendation: For optimal care of Hemnes pine wood, it is advisable to follow these steps:
- Thoroughly dust the furniture and clean it with a slightly damp cloth; avoid using harsh cleaning agents.
- Evenly apply a high-quality wood oil based on linseed oil using a lint-free cloth or sponge.
- Allow the oil to penetrate for 15 minutes, then carefully wipe off any excess oil.
- Let the surface dry thoroughly, ideally for 24 hours.
Common mistakes include applying too much oil or not wiping it off, which can lead to sticky or blotchy areas. For regular maintenance, application every 6 to 12 months is recommended, depending on usage and humidity levels. Using furniture wax as a top coat is optional but can provide an additional protective layer if the piece is subject to heavy use.

Using furniture wax as a finish is more of an option, but it provides an additional protective layerI fundamentally disagree with that. I believe that furniture wax is particularly underestimated when it comes to Hemnes. The wax creates a strong protective barrier against scratches and water stains, giving the wood a velvety surface. Of course, oils care for the wood from within, but without a protective wax layer, the piece becomes vulnerable to damage over time, especially with light pine. Anyone who values a lasting appearance should therefore use both: oil for conditioning and wax for protection. Naturally, this also depends on how the item is used, but I would never leave my Hemnes without wax.
I would like to add a point that is often overlooked: the preparation of the wood before the first treatment. Hemnes furniture is already lightly pre-treated, but I recommend lightly sanding the surface with very fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer) before the first care application. This allows oils and waxes to penetrate better and adhere more effectively. Afterwards, thoroughly remove the dust and then proceed with the treatment as recommended. Skipping this step risks reducing the effectiveness of the care. Additionally, products should be used sparingly and evenly, as frequent over-treatment can oversaturate the wood.
