Hello everyone,

I have a question that might interest some of you or that you might be able to answer from experience:

Which maintenance products help extend the lifespan of Billy?

I specifically mean the classic IKEA BILLY bookcases or similar wooden shelving units of this type, which are relatively affordable but often show signs of wear after a few years. I’m especially interested in which products can help prevent scratches, moisture damage, or discoloration without harming the surface or causing other issues.

Maybe you can share tips on specific treatments like waxes, oils, or finishes that are actually useful, and which ones are better to avoid. I’m also curious about the application—how often, how much, whether to clean beforehand, and so on.

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

I would like to add some basic care tips that might be especially useful for newcomers:

First, it is important to know that BILLY shelves use different surface materials depending on the model and production period. This strongly affects which cleaning products are suitable.

For lacquered surfaces:
- Mild cleaners without alcohol
- Occasional furniture polish for protection

For foil or melamine coatings:
- No waxes or oils, as these can damage the foil
- Only damp cleaning with mild dish soap

In general:
- Avoid excess moisture, as the panels can swell
- Do not use abrasive cleaners
- Regularly remove dust from the furniture to minimize micro-scratches

Avoiding moisture and aggressive substances is really the key to extending the lifespan of BILLY.

In response to this question: Careful handling, cleaning with mild products, avoiding wax on foil surfaces, and protecting against moisture are essential.
