Hello everyone, I have some Ikea Hemnes furniture at home with typical wood surfaces, which are often made of solid pine or similar wood. I’m wondering which care products are best suited to clean and protect these wood surfaces without causing darkening or unsightly stains. Does anyone have specific knowledge about wood protection requirements for Hemnes furniture? I’m not looking for general advice but rather recommendations for products that have been proven to be gentle and effective on the typical lacquered or oiled Hemnes wood. I’m especially interested in whether you prefer specific wood oils, waxes, soaps, or cleaning wipes, and how often the treatment should ideally be applied to keep the wood looking good in the long term. Thanks in advance for your tips!

I am also among those who, in addition to gently cleaning with wood soap or a special wood cleaner, like to apply a thin layer of furniture wax.

Is furniture wax really better or more suitable for Hemnes surfaces than traditional furniture oil? I’m a bit undecided.

Hello tojolo, I find your question about furniture oil versus furniture wax on Hemnes wood surfaces very interesting. Both products have their advantages: furniture oils, such as pure linseed oil or specialized wood care oils, penetrate deeply into the wood and nourish it from within. This keeps the wood flexible and prevents it from becoming brittle. Furniture wax, on the other hand, tends to form a protective layer on the surface and can help conceal minor scratches. It is important that the wax does not contain harmful solvents, as these can damage or discolor the surface. For Ikea Hemnes, which is often pretreated with wood oil or clear lacquer, I would recommend using mild oils if you want to keep the natural appearance. However, if you prefer a clearly visible protective finish, furniture wax is a good choice—best applied sparingly and only when needed.

Hello! I like to use a combination of both when caring for my Hemnes furniture—first gently cleaning it (for example, with a wood soap) and then occasionally applying furniture oil to prevent the surface from drying out. The oil I use mainly contains linseed oil and a small amount of carnauba wax – this creates a protective layer and brings out the wood’s natural shine. It’s important to apply the oil very thinly and allow it to absorb well. I agree with Kinbu’s view: pure oil nourishes deeply, wax provides a protective barrier. Sometimes you can also finish with a layer of wax to add a bit more resistance to scratches. What’s your take on this, Elodie, as a fan of oil treatment?

Hello Edric, exactly, I see it the same way. What’s great about Hemnes is that the wood stays beautifully natural when you don’t cover it with too much wax. I do often add small extras – but always sparingly and with the delicate feeling that less is more. 😄 When cleaning, I love using wood soap because it preserves the wood’s character. It’s like a little wellness treatment for the wood. If you then use a mixed product with linseed oil and some carnauba wax, the furniture almost feels like new. And of course, it smells pleasantly nice! The important thing is to avoid dish soap or any other harsh cleaners. That way, you’re on the safe side.

For Hemnes wood surfaces, use a mild wood care product without silicones or solvents. For maintenance, a few drops of pure linseed oil or a beeswax-based furniture wax are sufficient. Clean only with a lightly damp cloth; avoid any harsh cleaners.
