Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question for the community: Which care products work best for IKEA Hemnes furniture?

I have purchased several pieces from the Hemnes series, mostly made of solid pine wood, with either an oiled or lacquered surface. It is important to me to use products that not only keep the furniture looking well-maintained but also protect the wood surface without damaging or altering it unintentionally. There is a wide variety of oils, waxes, and special furniture care products available nowadays.

Therefore, I’m interested in hearing about your experiences with care products for Hemnes furniture. Are there any products that are clearly recommended or ones that should be avoided?

Also, should the care of oiled Hemnes surfaces be handled differently than lacquered ones?

I look forward to your tips and advice, preferably with explanations. Thank you!

Hello Gaelra,

First of all, a very precise question – this is important because maintenance actually depends on the surface type.

For IKEA HEMNES furniture, especially the oiled pinewood surfaces, I recommend using wood impregnations or natural oils such as linseed oil or specialized furniture care oils from brands that are explicitly suitable for oiled wood. These maintain the surface without sealing or coating it, preserving the natural appearance.

For lacquered HEMNES pieces, the approach is different: mild cleaning agents and usually a soft cloth are sufficient to remove dust and dirt. For additional protection, you can use special furniture polishes, such as wax-based ones, which protect the lacquer and add shine.

Important: Do not use aggressive cleaners or those containing silicones, as they can damage the surface. Also, avoid excessive moisture because pinewood is sensitive to water.

In short: oil the oiled parts naturally (but not too much), and clean and polish the lacquered parts gently.

Best regards!

I only use a special wood oil designed for oiled furniture on my HEMNES cabinets, and a microfiber cloth lightly dampened for the lacquered surfaces. It’s simple, no harsh chemicals.

It should be added that IKEA includes care instructions with some furniture items—especially with the HEMNES series. These usually recommend regularly re-oiling oiled surfaces to protect the wood from drying out.

When maintaining the furniture, it is important to avoid using products containing solvents, as these can dissolve the oil layer.

Even though natural oils are beneficial, it is advisable to test the product on an inconspicuous area before applying it to prevent any color changes.

Additionally, do not use waxes, as they can sometimes leave unpleasant residues on wood surfaces and seal the wood, which prevents it from breathing.

Thanks for the warning! Could you maybe explain a bit more about why silicones are problematic? I was planning to use a new plastic polish for my specific application, and these often contain silicone. Could this cause damage to the wood or the surface? Is the effect only superficial, or are there long-term consequences?

Silicones can actually form a very thin layer on the surface that initially appears glossy but eventually blocks the wood’s ability to absorb and release moisture properly. This effectively suffocates the wood. Additionally, silicones make future maintenance more difficult because other care products adhere less effectively. This is especially counterproductive for oiled wood.

If you mean a synthetic polish, it should only be used sparingly on painted or sealed surfaces. It is not suitable for oiled areas.
