Hello everyone, I am looking for recommendations and experiences with suitable care products for the surfaces of the Ikea Hemnes furniture series.

Specifically, I am interested in tips for cleaning agents and maintenance methods that preserve or enhance the typical paint finish and wood protection of the Hemnes series without damaging the surface.

Unfortunately, I have found quite different advice—some recommend mild soap solutions, others suggest special wood care products, or even no additional maintenance at all.

Does anyone have practical experience with cleaning or care products that both protect the matte paint finish and minimize discoloration or scratches?

The goal is to keep the furniture looking flawless and durable for as long as possible, without using harsh products. Thanks in advance for your input!

Basically, caution is advised with Ikea Hemnes furniture, as it features a white lacquer finish that is sensitive to harsh ingredients.

A mild, pH-neutral cleaner is perfectly sufficient. I recommend using simple lukewarm water with a few drops of dish soap, applied with a soft cotton cloth. Afterwards, wipe immediately with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

Care products based on wax or oil should generally be avoided, as they can discolor or dull the surface.

The Hemnes series does not really require special wood treatment since the lacquer acts as protection. If a glossier finish is desired, products designed for lacquered surfaces can be tested, but always try them first on an inconspicuous spot.

For additional clarity: Ikea Hemnes furniture is coated with a matte or satin lacquer that seals the wood and protects it from moisture.

– Therefore, the use of wood oils is unnecessary and may potentially dissolve or alter the lacquer layer.
– Furniture polish based on silicone or wax is also not recommended, as it can leave residues.
– Cleaning with a damp microfiber cloth and mild soapy water is sufficient.
– For stains, mild natural cleaners without solvents are suitable, but avoid alkaline or abrasive substances.

Occasional treatment with products designed for lacquered surfaces that use polymer-based formulations could be considered to protect the surface and prevent minor scratches.

However, regular maintenance in the traditional sense is not advised in order to preserve the original appearance and protective finish of the Hemnes series.

Hello Klanu,

I use several Hemnes furniture pieces myself and can confirm that handling cleaning products carefully is advisable.

I can only confirm that. I once tried a furniture oil, and it caused the surface to yellow slightly.

Therefore, I only use warm water with a neutral dish soap added, along with a soft cloth. For tougher stains, a drop of alcohol (e.g., rubbing alcohol) on the cloth helps, but please use only a small amount and never apply it directly to the surface.

Once a year, I apply a product designed for lacquered furniture to a soft cloth and gently polish the surface – this refreshes the appearance and provides a light protective film. Products specifically made for lacquered wood or plastic work well here.

It is important that the product contains no solvents, wax, or oils that are unsuitable for lacquer.

I hope this helps!

Simply use mild soap with water, no abrasive cleaners. Wipe off with a dry cloth.

Avoid wax or oil, as they cause the surface to become sticky. This method keeps the Hemnes surface clean and well protected.

I would like to add that moisture is an important factor when cleaning Hemnes surfaces.

Too much water can damage the edges, as they are often not sealed. So never leave wet standing or clean with a dripping wet cloth.

My routine:
- Dusting with a dry microfiber cloth
- Spot cleaning with a pressed damp cloth, no rubbing
- Cleaning products: mild dish soap without residues, nothing else

Avoid aggressive cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol, as they can harm the finish and cause discoloration.
