ZenosfuHello everyone,
I am currently looking into the care of my BRIMNES furniture series from IKEA and am searching for suitable products specifically designed for the surface treatment and maintenance of this furniture. I am particularly interested in care products that do not damage the material, but are also effective against everyday wear such as scratches, stains, or even small water rings.
Can anyone with personal experience or solid knowledge recommend which cleaning or care products are best suited for BRIMNES, which is made from a combination of particleboard with a melamine resin coating? What should I pay attention to regarding ingredients and application to preserve the durability and appearance of the furniture?
I look forward to your tips and any possible warnings if there are products that should definitely be avoided.

BRIMNES is made of particleboard coated with melamine resin, which means aggressive cleaners—especially those containing solvents or strong alkalis—can permanently damage the surface.
For care, I recommend mild products, ideally pH-neutral or mildly alkaline cleaners. For everyday cleaning, a soft, damp microfiber cloth with plain water is often sufficient. For tougher dirt, a small amount of mild dish detergent diluted in water can be used, but only sparingly to avoid leaving residues.
I would definitely avoid waxes, oils, or polishes intended for wood surfaces—they may cause unattractive residues or even discoloration on melamine.
It would be interesting to know if anyone here uses specific products with proven experience or warranty for preserving melamine coatings, and if there are recommendations for brands or product types known to be safe?

For the optimal care of the BRIMNES furniture, the following steps should be followed:
- Cleaning: Always use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth that is lightly dampened. Avoid soaking the cloth to prevent water from penetrating the edges.
- Cleaning agents: Use only mild all-purpose cleaners with a neutral pH or a product specifically approved for melamine-coated furniture.
- Stain removal: For tougher stains, a 1:10 dilution of vinegar essence can be used, but only briefly and followed by wiping with clear water to avoid damage to the coating.
- Care: Since the material does not have an open-pored surface, oils and waxes are not suitable and can leave residues that are difficult to remove later.
- General: Avoid aggressive solvents such as acetone, alcohol, or abrasive cleaners, as these will definitely damage the melamine resin coating.
Tip: Always test new products on an inconspicuous area before treating the entire piece of furniture to avoid unpleasant surprises.
One more question: Have you noticed any issues with edges or areas where the coating comes off after some time with your BRIMNES? Incorrect maintenance could also be a factor.
