Hello everyone,
I recently bought some furniture with so-called Billy foil surfaces and am now wondering what kind of care is best for this type of surface to keep it looking good and undamaged for as long as possible. Are there any specific cleaning products or care treatments that you would recommend? Should aggressive cleaners be avoided, or would mild cleaners be better? What are your experiences, especially regarding the durability and shine of the foil?
I look forward to your tips and advice!

Hello TIMEKEN,
Good question! In general, avoid cleaners for films or coatings that contain solvents like alcohol, acetone, or ammonia, which are often listed as ingredients. These can damage or dull the films. Also, avoid abrasive ingredients like scrubbing particles (often found in scouring agents).
Furniture care products labeled as “for coated or lacquered surfaces” are usually gentle. It’s best to read the instructions and test new products on an inconspicuous spot first.
IKEA (manufacturer of Billy) generally recommends cleaning surfaces with a damp cloth and using mild soapy water for stubborn stains. Special care products are usually not specifically mentioned. The official advice is: no harsh sprays, no abrasive cleaners, no alcohol.
Feel free to ask if you have any further questions!

Could you or someone else perhaps explain in more detail how to tell if care products are really gentle enough? Are there specific ingredients to avoid on the labels?

Do the original Billy furniture pieces have any care recommendations or do the manufacturers refer to specific cleaning products?

I have been using Billy furniture with foil surfaces for a few years now and can say that I’ve had the best results with a microfiber cloth and a neutral all-purpose cleaner, but only applied very sparingly—meaning the cleaner is applied to the cloth, not directly onto the furniture.
That is 100% true! Microfiber cloths are perfect.
Also, I never let the foil surfaces stay wet for too long because standing moisture can damage the foil. I clean small spots immediately to keep everything looking nice and bright.
I hope this helps you all :-)

Microfiber cloths are great because they clean gently and don’t cause scratches.

Hi everyone!
It’s amazing how much helpful information has already been shared here! 🙂 I just want to remind you of the importance of buffing with a soft, dry cloth after cleaning. This will make the surface shine and remove any streaks.
Also, when cleaning, be gentle with pressure and avoid rubbing too hard, as films are thin and can be easily damaged if stressed too much.
Do you have any other care tips that can help protect the film in the long term?

Hello Pome60,
Exactly! Polishing is an important step that many people underestimate.
To answer your question: In addition to cleaning, you can regularly use furniture care products designed for plastics, such as silicone-based sprays or special plastic care products. These create a thin protective layer that helps guard against dust and dirt.
However, I would advise against using wax-oil treatments or Doblausfein, as these can leave residues on the film and negatively affect its appearance.
Good alternatives are specialized film care products available from professional suppliers or even mild car polish products. As always, test any product first on an inconspicuous area.
Trust me, with a little patience and care, the Billy film will stay looking great 🙂
