Hello

We are looking for suitable cabinets for our basement room.

The basement will be used as a storage and pantry area.

What cabinets would you recommend?

The cabinets do not need doors. They should provide a lot of space, and we will be storing many IKEA boxes.

The cabinets should also be quite affordable.

Exactly. Heavy-duty shelves have the disadvantage that the shelves cannot be adjusted individually.

Of course, they can be adjusted as needed. The cheap ones from the hardware store are just slotted in, but that can be changed. Ours are screwed in place; it takes a bit more effort, but they could also be adjusted in 5 cm (2 inch) increments.
However, they are more load-bearing that way. I just checked—I have about 200 beverage cans of 0.5 liters (0.13 gallons) each and one bag of dog food on the shelves.

Yes, metal shelving units are generally more load-bearing. However, with screw-together shelves, it can be more of a hassle to reposition a shelf board. With Ivar, you just move the four pegs, and you’re done.
Also, it’s really important to know exactly what you need to store. Some kind of storage planning helps to better understand what you actually require, including the variety of items.
Ivar has the advantage of durability for expansion and additions. As mentioned, my oldest parts date back to 1981 and they still fit together perfectly.

Painting or glazing helps protect against moisture. You should do this with steel shelves as well 😉

Thank you for your messages.

I think we prefer a metal shelving unit because it is more stable.

We don’t need flexibility; we will set up the shelves once and probably rarely or never move them again.

The Bror series from Ikea is also interesting.

Omar doesn’t look that good.

Alternatively, we could use proper heavy-duty shelving.

We store most of our items in boxes like the Samla boxes from Ikea.

Over the years, I have bought shelving units from Schäfer through classified ads (sometimes at great prices) and now have about 14 linear meters (46 feet) of shelves, each 2 meters (6.5 feet) high. The shelves can be adjusted in height, which is a bit labor-intensive but doable. Additionally, we have purchased around 25 "Really Useful Box" containers to keep items dust-free and to make better use of the shelf depth. Since the boxes are transparent, it’s easy to see what’s inside and find what you’re looking for faster. We plan to continue using this system in the basement of our new house because the shelving units are extremely low-maintenance and very sturdy.

The advantage of this practical system is that if the basement ever floods, the boxes will float, and the galvanized steel shelves tolerate water exposure better than comparable wooden systems. Since flooding has occurred relatively often in our area, this was a pretty important factor for us. ;-)

@Manatarms123 ... you are asking but not very helpful yourself, since you don’t provide any details about what exactly you want to store. That is a poor basis for advice.
