Hello everyone,
I need some help choosing the right brackets for my Malm furniture from Ikea. Specifically, I’m looking for the best wall mounts or safety systems to secure the furniture against tipping. I have a taller Malm chest of drawers with multiple drawers, which I believe should be firmly anchored, especially since there are children in the house.

I’m also unsure whether the brackets provided by Ikea are sufficient or if it makes sense to use stronger alternatives, such as heavy-duty brackets or specialized anti-tip devices. It’s important to me to find a solution that isn’t too complicated to install but still holds reliably.

Does anyone have experience with this and can recommend which brackets are particularly suitable for Malm furniture? Thanks in advance!

This is a really important question, especially when there are small children in the house! I myself spent a long time considering whether to rely only on the included brackets. In the end, I also used additional anti-tip straps that you screw in like a bracket – it gives me much more peace of mind.

Sometimes the Ikea fittings are actually a bit undersized, and with the Malm dresser with so many drawers, you can definitely feel the weight. From my experience, the proper anchoring in the wall material is crucial. What good are the best brackets if the wall plugs only hold moderately well?

So my advice: invest in high-quality wall plugs, preferably depending on the wall type (concrete, drywall, etc.), and combine them with the Ikea wall mounting kits. If that still doesn’t feel secure enough, there are anti-tip sets available at hardware stores that are easy to install and provide much greater stability.

Don’t worry, all of this is doable even if you’re not a professional. 🙂 If you have any questions about installation, I’m happy to help!

Always use the tip-over restraints provided by Ikea. They are sufficient for standard walls and protect against tipping hazards, especially with children.

If you expect heavier loads, use heavy-duty anchors and brackets from a hardware store.

No complicated solutions are necessary.

It’s interesting that the supplied anti-tip straps are often relied on exclusively here.

This observation raises the fundamental question of how load-bearing standard anti-tip devices really are. Not every wall is equally stable, and furniture can exert different kinds of loads. Especially with drywall (plasterboard) walls, I recommend using specialized anchors or additional reinforcements.

You should also consider whether the furniture will be moved later. Sometimes a flexible solution like Velcro strips or rubber mats makes sense to prevent slipping without having to drill.

I’m also wondering if there are certified third-party brackets that provide greater safety than Ikea’s. Has anyone here worked with such alternatives and can share their pros and cons? Additionally, I’m curious about which brackets meet the highest safety standards—perhaps those used in public areas, but also a good benchmark for private homes.

Hey, I often use the original Ikea anti-tip straps myself because they are quick to install and do a good job. 😉 But for my Malm dresser, I also placed some elastic anti-slip pads under the feet, which work great if the floor is slightly uneven and can help reduce the tipping risk.

For walls that aren’t very sturdy, it’s best to use Fischer wall anchors, a classic choice. They hold incredibly well, and yes, they’re definitely worth it even for drywall (plasterboard). It doesn’t have to be rocket science, but with good anchors and brackets, the cabinet is really secure.

Since you asked, I think it’s okay to be a bit creative. There are also brackets made of better materials and screws that you can find at hardware stores. Just don’t get discouraged—usually, common sense combined with some DIY skills is more than enough! 🙂
