Hello everyone,

I am planning to buy several BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to pay special attention to durability. Therefore, I am interested in which models or versions of the BILLY shelves are known for having a particularly long lifespan, especially regarding material quality, construction, and load-bearing capacity. Are there differences between the various types of wood (e.g., particleboard vs. solid wood appearance) or coatings that affect durability? It would also be helpful to know which shelves are best suited for heavier loads or for long-term use in slightly more humid rooms.

Thank you for your experiences and tips!

The standard particleboard versions are sturdy, but for greater durability, I recommend the BILLY variant with a melamine coating. The surface is more resistant to scratches and moisture. For heavy loads, the wider modules with additional back panels are more stable.

The BILLY shelves are mainly available in particleboard with decorative foil or melamine coating. Melamine is more resistant to moisture and abrasion than the purely foil-covered versions.

Additionally, the shelves are offered with solid wood side panels, which improve stability. For long-term use with higher loads, the wider models (80 cm (31.5 inches)) are significantly more stable than the narrow ones (40 cm (15.7 inches)). The braces at the back contribute to stiffness and are important when storing heavy items.

In damp environments, I advise against the standard BILLY shelves, as the particleboard can swell. In such cases, it is better to opt for specially coated or lacquered versions or to add protective measures to the shelf.

Conclusion: For especially long-lasting durability, I recommend BILLY shelves with melamine coating, wide models with solid wood side panels, and additional back panels.

I can definitely agree with that! I’ve had mine for years, and the melamine coating really holds up well, even if something spills or tips over. 🙂

I have the wide BILLY in my study and put a lot of weight on it – it holds up surprisingly well! One tip: The shelves shouldn’t be placed directly against the wall but should have some air circulation, which also extends their lifespan.

Overall, I think BILLY can be really durable with a bit of care, even if it’s not solid wood furniture. 😉

Particleboard serves as the base material in BILLY, often covered with foil or melamine coating. Solid wood is only used in smaller components, such as covers or non-standard shelves.

Durability is mostly determined by the melamine coating – this is significantly more resistant than foil and offers better protection against moisture and mechanical wear.

Regarding load capacity: the 80cm (31.5 inches) wide versions are more stable because they use stronger supporting profiles. For very heavy loads, additional sturdy wall fasteners and back panels should be installed to prevent the shelving unit from warping.

Practical tip: accessories like steel reinforcements for the shelves are sometimes available as options, which can also increase durability.

Melamine-coated BILLY shelves are more durable than the versions with veneer.

For greater stability, you should choose wider shelves with a back panel.

The standard version is not suitable for damp rooms.
