I plan to furnish my newly arranged apartment with Billy shelves from IKEA, mainly to use several of them for books. However, the information on the maximum weight capacity per shelf is not entirely clear. My question is: Which versions or constructions of the Billy shelves can actually hold more weight? Are there differences in materials, depth, or the type of wall mounting that I should consider? And do you have any experience on whether the shelves become more stable if, for example, additional shelves are installed or reinforcements are made? I am hoping for well-founded advice to avoid unnecessary complaints or damage.

The deeper version with a depth of 40 cm (16 inches) usually supports more weight than the standard 28 cm (11 inches). It is also important that the shelf is mounted to the wall, otherwise it will tip over easily. Adding more shelves hardly makes a difference in the load capacity per shelf.

I completely agree! Greater depth means more surface area supporting the load, which distributes the weight better 😊. And if you use the shelves frequently, it’s worth reinforcing the shelf boards with a small wooden strip – that makes it even sturdier. A tip: don’t be too sparing with the screws when fixing to the wall, you definitely want to avoid a domino effect 😉

I think relying solely on the standard specifications is somewhat naive. Most users greatly underestimate the load limits. To put it provocatively: why not opt for sturdier shelving systems right away if heavy books are the goal? Billy is nice and affordable, but it quickly reaches its limits under heavy loads. The tips you mentioned about depth and wall mounting might help, but in the end, the system is designed more for everyday items—not for large book collections you want to be confident about.

I partly agree, but Billy can definitely carry a lot if you choose the right setup. The 40 cm (16 inches) deep shelves are more stable, especially when anchored to the wall. However, it is important not to exceed the maximum load per shelf – usually around 30 kilograms (66 pounds). If you need to support more weight, I would especially recommend additional reinforcements on the shelves or switching to steel or metal shelving units. Wall mounting is not just a safety feature to prevent tipping; it also relieves stress on the edges of the shelves, which significantly increases their load capacity.
