Hello everyone,

I am planning to place a Billy shelf from IKEA in a somewhat more humid room, where increased humidity occurs regularly – specifically, it is a heated but not fully air-conditioned conservatory. I am therefore very interested in which Billy shelves from the range are the most durable against moisture or slightly damp environments.

I understand that the classic Billy shelf is made of particleboard with a foil coating, which does not withstand moisture very well, but IKEA also offers versions with different surfaces or materials.

I would like to hear about your experience: Is there a particular series or model variant you would specifically recommend if you want to set up the shelf not in the living room, but in a slightly damp room?

I am also happy to receive affordable tips for additional measures to increase durability against moisture.

Thank you in advance!

For moisture-prone areas, it’s best to choose the Billy shelves with a melamine resin surface, as they are somewhat more resistant.

Avoid solid wood; coated panels are always better.

Also, keep a gap from the wall and allow for ventilation.

Hello Jalapi,

to explore the topic in more detail: The classic Billy shelf unit, as you correctly mentioned, is made from particleboard with a paper laminate finish. The surface is not waterproof, so the board swells when exposed to prolonged moisture and loses stability.

IKEA currently does not offer any special waterproof versions of Billy, but there are newer models with a melamine resin coating. This surface is thin but denser and much better protected against moisture penetration than simple laminate. In particular, the white Billy variants often have this coating.

Additionally, here are some tips to increase durability:

1. Do not place shelves directly on the floor – use feet or small spacers to prevent moisture rising.
2. Reinforce the back panel: The thin back panel is often especially vulnerable; consider replacing it with waterproof boards or at least painting it with moisture-resistant lacquer.
3. Regular room ventilation prevents mold and water damage.
4. Protective measures on the edges (e.g., plastic edge guards) can contribute to longer lifespan.

If you expect a lot of condensation, a shelf made from more solid material (for example, metal) or one specifically marketed as a moisture-resistant shelving unit might be more suitable. Billy shelves are primarily designed for dry living spaces.

I would be interested to know if your conservatory is permanently heated and what the typical maximum humidity level is on average? That could change the recommendations.

That sounds plausible, but it is important to critically consider how resistant this melamine resin coating really is to prolonged exposure to moisture. Especially in a sunroom or conservatory, where temperature fluctuations and condensation are common, the material may still degrade relatively quickly.

I consider this the most important point. Even the most durable surface is of little use if the shelf is constantly exposed to rising moisture.

I would also recommend sealing all edges as an additional measure. Unfortunately, IKEA tends to be sparse with these kinds of details, which makes the shelves vulnerable when used in damp environments.

Therefore, my question to everyone: Who can confirm from personal experience that a Billy shelf with melamine resin coating remains stable over time under moisture exposure? I tried it once, and after about two years, swelling at the edges was already noticeable.

Hello everyone,

From my experience, the standard Billy shelves can be quite problematic in damp or semi-damp environments because the particleboard tends to swell quickly.

What I can recommend in such cases is using the Billy shelf versions with a melamine resin coating, as mentioned here before. While these are not completely moisture-proof, they withstand splashes and short periods of moisture better.

At the same time, I took additional measures on one project:
- All exposed edges were sealed with waterproof acrylic.
- The back panel was replaced with a thin, water-repellent MDF board that was treated with clear varnish.
- Additionally, I placed the shelf on small wooden battens to prevent moisture from rising from the floor into the shelf carcass.

This combination significantly extends the lifespan.

If the environment is particularly damp, such as basements or unheated conservatories, I would advise against the classic Billy shelf and recommend plastic or metal alternatives instead.

If you have any questions about these sealing measures – feel free to ask!
