Hello everyone,

I am planning to use several IKEA Billy bookcases to store heavy items. I have a question: Which Billy bookcases are specifically designed for heavy loads, and how well do the different versions (e.g., width, material, and number of shelves) actually hold up under heavier weight?

I am also interested in whether there are reinforcements or special shelves available in the official range that should be used to ensure the unit is secure. Additionally, it would be helpful to hear about real-world experience regarding the maximum loads that are realistic without the bookcase warping or becoming unstable.

I look forward to a well-informed discussion and thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello Kueshref,

Regarding your question: The classic BILLY shelves from IKEA are generally designed to hold about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf, but this greatly depends on the width and how they are used. The 40 cm (16 inches) wide versions usually support more weight than the wider 80 cm (31 inches) ones because the load is better distributed and the side panels provide greater stability.

It is also important to fix the shelves to the wall to prevent tipping—this is essential when carrying heavy loads.

Additionally, IKEA offers glass shelves made of safety glass and reinforcement kits specifically designed for BILLY shelves. These can help if you want to distribute the load across multiple levels.

A practical approach is to spread the weight over many small areas instead of placing it all on a few shelves. Do you already have an idea of what kind of items you want to store? That could help make the recommendation more precise.

Hello everyone,

I would like to provide a more technical explanation, as important details are often overlooked here.

Each BILLY shelf unit features shelves made of load-bearing MDF board with a typical thickness of 16 mm (0.63 inches). The official maximum load capacity per shelf is about 30 kg (66 lbs), but this is only a guideline. The actual load capacity depends on several factors:

1. Shelf width: The narrower models (40 cm / 16 inches) are more stable and can carry more weight than the wider ones (80 cm / 31 inches), as the deflection of the shelves is less.

2. Number of support pins: Some versions use metal pins to hold the shelves, which are not very load-bearing when weight increases significantly.

3. Wall mounting: This prevents tipping and provides increased stability but does not reinforce the load capacity of the shelves.

4. Reinforcements: IKEA does not offer official load capacity reinforcements, but there are third-party accessories, such as metal plates or other inserts, to increase load-bearing capacity. Alternatively, you can install stronger shelves yourself (e.g., made of solid wood).

5. Loading: Heavy items should be placed as close as possible to the sides and distributed evenly to avoid point loads.

I am also wondering whether your main focus is on appearance or purely on functionality? Depending on that, it might make sense to modify the shelves further.

What exactly do you want to store? Do you have weight information for your items? That helps a lot with planning.

The narrow BILLY shelves (40cm (16 inches)) are more stable for heavy loads. Always mount on the wall and distribute weight evenly. Do not place heavy items on the glass shelves.

Important: Reinforcing additional shelves is helpful if you are installing wooden boards yourself. IKEA shelves are sturdy, but they may have issues with heavy loads. A width of 80 cm (31.5 inches) is less suitable for heavy items.

Thanks for the detailed information! Specifically, it’s about heavy boxes with tools, each weighing around 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs), along with some large books that together add a similar weight.

I don’t want to compromise on stability, since the shelf will be used daily. Glass shelves are not an option for me, as the surface does not seem strong enough.

Is there a way to replace the original BILLY shelves with more robust custom-made ones without “ruining” the shelf itself? I’d prefer not to buy a completely different shelving series, as I like the simple design and how well it fits in my room.

Also, I wonder if there are differences in the newer BILLY models in the range that might use sturdier materials.
