Hello everyone,

I’m planning to organize my rooms using Billy bookcases from Ikea and use them as room dividers. Since I know there are different versions of the Billy bookcase – various heights, widths, and with or without doors – I’m wondering which models from the Billy series are especially suitable as room dividers, meaning sturdy enough to stand freely and also visually appealing.

It’s important to me that the room divider is not only robust but also offers enough storage space and, depending on the use, appears semi-transparent or open so it doesn’t feel too heavy. Maybe you also know solutions for stabilizing or connecting Billy bookcases?

I’m mainly interested in experiences with different sizes (width/depth/height) and assembly options that you would recommend for a room divider.

Thanks in advance for your tips and suggestions!

Hello Fademir,

your question is very well formulated and precisely addresses the challenge many users face when using Billy bookcases as room dividers.

In general, the wider Billy bookcases (I mean the 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide model instead of the 40 cm (15.7 inches) one) are better suited as freestanding room dividers because they stand more stable. The 28 cm (11 inches) depth is also recommended, as it provides more storage space and makes the unit feel less prone to tipping.

It is important, however, that you connect the units—either with special wooden slats, brackets, or shelving rails from a hardware store—so they form a single unit and cannot fall over.

Many also use the 202 cm (79.5 inches) high model to create a strong visual separation in the room. The height should match the room size; otherwise, it can quickly feel overwhelming.

If you prefer open shelving, simply use the basic units without doors. Doors tend to make the divider heavier and more closed off, which you want to avoid.

If you still need a closed section, you can install doors on the lower part and leave shelves open on top—this way you get a good balance of storage and openness.

Regarding stabilization: you can secure the units at the bottom on both sides with baseboards to prevent slipping and also fix them to the wall with brackets—this ensures they stand very sturdy, even when placed in the middle of the room.

I hope this helps you for now. If you like, I can also give you tips on special connection methods or accessories to make the whole setup much safer.

I recommend 80x28x202 cm (31.5x11x79.5 inches) Billy shelves, as they are sturdy enough to be used as room dividers.

Open shelves can be used depending on preference; increase stability by connecting them with brackets or wooden strips.

Adding doors makes them heavier and less suitable as room dividers.

Many also use the 202 cm (79 inches) tall model to create a clear visual separation within a room.

I agree with this, but the height should not be oversized relative to the ceiling height. A height of about 190 to 202 cm (75 to 79 inches) is ideal if the room height is at least 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in).

Regarding stability: Billy shelves are not designed for freestanding use on their own and require stabilization. Connecting the units, for example with connector screws, provides high safety and prevents tipping.

The depth of 28 cm (11 inches) is better suited as a room divider than the 20 cm (8 inches) version because it offers more stability and storage space.

Open shelves bring more lightness to the room, while closed doors provide privacy but appear bulkier.

If you plan to use the shelves freestanding, additional floor protection and securing them to the floor or ceiling is also possible to ensure long-term safety.

All in all, the wide and deep Billy shelves with a height of 202 cm (79 inches) offer the best foundation as a room divider.

Do you already have a specific room in mind where you want to place the shelf? That could help with a more tailored recommendation.
