Hello everyone,
I’m currently exploring how to furnish small spaces as efficiently as possible, especially focusing on IKEA Billy bookcases. Since these shelves are very versatile, I’m wondering which versions and dimensions of the Billy bookcase work best for small rooms to maximize storage without making the space feel cluttered or too tight. I’m particularly interested in whether narrower shelves, lower models, or possibly versions with doors are better for creating a pleasant atmosphere while still providing enough room for books, decorations, and other items.
It would be great if you could share specific recommendations, practical tips, or experiences with different Billy configurations in small spaces. Advice regarding the width, height, and depth of the various models, possible improvements like additional shelves, or space-saving suggestions are also welcome.
Thanks in advance!

a combination of open and closed options ... more flexibility Exactly! Honestly, you rarely have only doors or only open compartments in real life. A mix of both makes the furniture lively and practical – and the room doesn’t feel so boxy. 🙂
Also: it’s better to have a single, slim shelf arranged cleverly in length than a bulky, overpowering piece that dominates the room. For example, a 40cm (16 inch) deep Billy unit with a relatively low height, filled with color-coordinated boxes, really brightens up the whole setup.
