Hello everyone,

I’m currently exploring how to furnish small spaces as efficiently as possible, especially focusing on IKEA Billy bookcases. Since these shelves are very versatile, I’m wondering which versions and dimensions of the Billy bookcase work best for small rooms to maximize storage without making the space feel cluttered or too tight. I’m particularly interested in whether narrower shelves, lower models, or possibly versions with doors are better for creating a pleasant atmosphere while still providing enough room for books, decorations, and other items.

It would be great if you could share specific recommendations, practical tips, or experiences with different Billy configurations in small spaces. Advice regarding the width, height, and depth of the various models, possible improvements like additional shelves, or space-saving suggestions are also welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

for small rooms, I recommend the narrow version of the Billy bookcase (about 40cm (16 inches) wide). It saves space while still providing enough storage. Doors can help make the room look tidier. The height can be chosen depending on ceiling height, but not too tall, as it can feel overwhelming.

Exactly, it also creates a calming visual effect! 🙂

I especially like the combination of narrow design with doors when the room is not only small but also used as an office or bedroom. When everything is nicely hidden away, the space immediately feels much airier and less cluttered.

A small tip: The bright white of the shelves also helps make the room appear larger.

To select the best Billy shelves for small spaces, it is important to carefully analyze the room dimensions, as the standard models vary:

- Width: 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) narrow version is recommended because it takes up significantly less space compared to the standard width of 80 cm (approximately 31.5 inches).
- Height: 106 cm or 112 cm (lower models) are better suited when ceiling height is limited or if a less dominant furniture appearance is desired.
- Depth: 28 cm (approximately 11 inches) options save more space than the usual 33 cm (approximately 13 inches), without greatly reducing storage capacity.

Additionally, doors not only enhance the appearance but also protect against dust. Extra shelves can be added modularly to better tailor the storage space to individual needs.

For optimal use of space, the shelf should be placed against walls whenever possible, to avoid blocking space in the middle of the room.

I agree with the dimensions, but it’s worth considering whether a combination of open and closed shelving (partly with doors, partly open) might offer more flexibility in a small space. This way, you can both display items visibly and also create targeted storage for less attractive objects.

Furthermore, you should consider whether to use shelves all the way up to the ceiling or deliberately leave some free space. Both options significantly affect the perception of the room and should be considered depending on the ceiling height.

For small spaces, the narrow Billy shelves with a width of 40 cm (16 inches) are definitely recommended. However, I would like to add that the choice of lighting and wall color around the shelves is also crucial.

A white painted shelf combined with warm white, indirect lighting makes the room appear less cramped. Doors combined with storage solutions like boxes help keep things organized.

Additionally, installing shelves at different heights can create more storage space while optimizing individual use.
