Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion about spare parts for the IKEA Billy bookshelf.

My question specifically concerns which spare parts for the Billy bookshelf are the most difficult to obtain when trying to reorder them. This is not about general IKEA availability, but specifically about small original replacement parts, such as screws, back panels, small fittings, or other components that might need to be replaced during use.

I have the impression that some of the more specific parts are often no longer available directly from IKEA. Sometimes only leftover stock can be found, or one has to turn to third-party suppliers, which is not an ideal solution if you want to maintain the originality of the bookshelf.

I’m interested to know which parts you have found hardest to reorder for your Billy bookshelves. Are there parts that fail more often for you or that you have given up trying to replace because they are no longer available? Or do you have any tips on the best way to source these rare parts?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences, preferably with exact part names or designations if you know them. Thanks in advance!

Back panels are often difficult to obtain from Billy, especially if you have an older version. Screws can usually be reordered directly from IKEA at any time.

Hello APOLLPI,

I can understand your observation very well. The back panels are particularly problematic because IKEA often sells them only as part of complete sets or eventually discontinues them. The same applies to specific shelf supports, meaning the small fittings that hold up the shelves. When these are damaged, it can sometimes be difficult to find exact replacement parts.

Screws and standard fittings are usually still available or at least interchangeable with commonly available hardware. If you have trouble finding very specific parts, it’s also worth checking out used parts marketplaces or IKEA fan forums, where leftover stock is often offered.

Additionally, I have had good experiences inquiring about spare parts directly at a larger IKEA department store – they sometimes still have small leftover quantities not listed online.

Hope this helps you!

I can definitely relate to that. I’ve also experienced how difficult it is to find a replacement back panel. These thin boards often break easily when you move the shelving unit or place something on it.

It was quite frustrating for me at the time because I had to completely disassemble the shelving unit, and then a missing replacement part delayed the entire project. I hope IKEA improves this by offering small spare parts more reliably in the long run. Until then, I can only recommend handling the back panels carefully and protecting them well.

How do you deal with a damaged part? Do you replace the entire shelving unit, or do you try to get individual parts?

Hey, great topic here! 🙂

I really like how many experiences are already coming together. For me, it’s actually the small shelf supports, those little plastic pieces that sometimes break very quickly. Not super obvious, but without them, the shelves just don’t hold properly and that’s really annoying!

But don’t worry 🙂 IKEA can sometimes be really helpful, especially if you ask nicely. I’ve already received replacements twice, even though they weren’t officially available to order in the store! Just ask at customer service and stay polite – it often works.

Let’s keep at it and continue sharing tips! It’s awesome when you can use a Billy for a long time and don’t have to keep buying new furniture ;-)

Brief and to the point: The hardest replacement parts to obtain for the Billy bookshelf are the back panels (usually thin hardboard), the specific shelf supports (plastic or metal clips), and connectors that IKEA sometimes does not sell separately.

There is usually no availability issue with standard screws and basic fittings, as they are used in other products as well. The problem arises with parts that are specific to the model or generation.

My recommendation: Document the parts you need as precisely as possible, including measurements and type specifications, and contact your local IKEA store. Alternatively, replacement parts can be found through third-party suppliers or online marketplaces, but often without any guarantee of fit or quality.

For professional repairs, universal fittings may be a possible alternative.
