Hello everyone, I am currently planning to get a new bookcase and am considering the well-known Billy models from IKEA. My main concern is that the bookcase must be particularly sturdy, as I want to store a large number of books, especially heavy ones. My question is: which BILLY models are specifically designed for heavy loads and offer sufficient stability without needing extensive reinforcements? Are there certain versions or accessories that have proven effective? I would appreciate any helpful information!

A tip: The 80x28x106 cm (31.5x11x41.7 inch) model is more stable than you might think when mounted on the wall. For very heavy books, it’s better to combine several of these smaller units rather than using one tall shelving unit, which is more prone to tipping.

Thank you for the feedback so far! A brief addition from my side: The books together weigh about 100 kilograms (220 pounds), distributed across roughly 4 to 5 shelves. My space is somewhat limited, so a width of 80 cm (31.5 inches) would definitely be feasible, but I’m also interested in a combination of several lower shelves. What I’m still wondering is: Are there material differences, such as thickness or quality, among the different Billy variants that affect stability? And what about accessories? Is it easy to upgrade those, or are compatibility issues common?

Good question. Basically, the BILLY versions are made from similar materials—particleboard with a veneer surface. The thickness of the fixed side panels is about 16 mm (5/8 inch), which is fairly standard. The shelves are also around 15 mm (9/16 inch), which is sufficient for normal loads, but it becomes more critical with heavier books.

The accessories are generally quite compatible, but if you add extra shelves or reinforcements, you should pay close attention to the item numbers, as minor changes may have occurred over the years. IKEA metal brackets fit very well; many DIYers also use universal brackets and screws to better distribute the load.

My advice: if you plan to distribute about 100 kg (220 lbs) over 4–5 shelves, you should definitely reinforce the shelf supports or use metal holders, as the standard setup could become overloaded over time.

I stored my heavy books in two 80cm (31.5 inches) BILLY shelves. It is important to secure the shelves to the wall and to use the sturdier shelves. There are hardly any compatibility issues with the accessories.

I understand that stability is important for many bookshelves. Sometimes you feel unsure whether the shelf will hold or not. I also asked a lot of questions before buying my BILLY. The good thing is: with some care and wall mounting, the shelf becomes really secure. So you’re not alone in this; many people can confirm that!

Joking aside: When the shelf is properly mounted on the wall, 80cm (31.5 inches) wide BILLY models are real heavyweights. Just distribute the shelves evenly, not all packed closely together. And if you do place them close, use extra brackets for the shelves – that way everything stays stable and doesn’t wobble. 🙂
