RoryonHello everyone, I am currently planning to get a new bookcase and am considering the well-known Billy models from IKEA. My main concern is that the bookcase must be particularly sturdy, as I want to store a large number of books, especially heavy ones. My question is: which BILLY models are specifically designed for heavy loads and offer sufficient stability without needing extensive reinforcements? Are there certain versions or accessories that have proven effective? I would appreciate any helpful information!
Hey Roryon, good question! 😄 I have a BILLY shelf with the wider shelves and extra metal brackets, and it really holds up well for me. The 80cm (31.5 inches) wide models especially seem sturdier than the 40 or 60cm (16 or 24 inches) versions. I would also recommend properly securing the back panels instead of just gluing them, that makes a big difference.
Regarding the stability of BILLY shelves: The model with a width of 80 cm (31.5 inches) and a height of 202 cm (79.5 inches) is generally the most load-bearing. IKEA specifies a maximum load per shelf of about 30 kg (66 lbs), evenly distributed. The shelves with widths of 40 cm (15.7 inches) or 80 cm (31.5 inches) in the standard height of 202 cm (79.5 inches) are designed for everyday use; heavier loads require additional reinforcements or mounting on the wall with the recommended anchors. It is advisable to always secure the shelf to the wall to prevent tipping.
I would like to provide a more detailed explanation regarding the stability of BILLY shelves, especially for heavy books:
1. Load capacity: The shelves are usually made of particleboard with a veneer layer and are typically mounted with metal supports that can hold a load of about 30 kg per shelf.
2. Variants: The 80x28x202 cm (31½ x 11 x 79½ inches) model offers more stability due to its greater width, as the support points are distributed more widely.
3. Reinforcement: For very heavy books, I recommend either adding extra metal brackets to the shelves or installing an additional center support to prevent sagging.
4. Wall mounting: It is always important to secure the shelf to the wall, usually using the included brackets, to prevent tipping.
5. Accessories: IKEA offers accessories such as additional shelves or back panels that can increase the rigidity of the unit.
If you like, I can also provide tips on how to upgrade the shelf yourself for maximum stability.

I once overloaded my 40cm (15.7 inches) BILLY bookshelf with some really heavy books – that's when I realized wider is better. And as glamo already mentioned, a few extra brackets are worth their weight in gold. Especially if you want to avoid sagging. 🙂
