Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into discoloration issues with IKEA BILLY bookcases and would like to know: which BILLY models are particularly prone to such discoloration?

I have noticed that some versions and surface finishes develop stains or color changes over time, especially when placed near windows or subjected to frequent use. I am interested to find out if there are specific models or color variants that are known to be more affected due to the materials or coatings used.

If anyone has experience with different BILLY models that are more or less susceptible, could you please share details about the model, age, and location of use? I am mainly looking for reliable information so I can make an informed decision for my next purchase. Thanks in advance!

I have several BILLY models at home and have noticed that those with melamine resin-coated surfaces are the most resistant to discoloration.

For example, my white melamine BILLY has been in use for 5 years with no discoloration, despite sun exposure.

In contrast, the older model with a white foil finish showed significant discoloration near the window area.

Recommendation: If discoloration is a concern, choose BILLY with melamine coating.

BILLY models with black foil are less prone to discoloration but are susceptible to visible dust deposits, which should be quickly cleaned off with a damp cloth.

My tip: Avoid the white, foil-coated BILLY shelves near south- or west-facing windows.

The models with real wood veneer are more expensive but less prone to damage and still look good after years.

The older BILLY models (before 2010) sometimes had a thinner foil coating

Thank you for the note about the manufacturing date! That helps me a lot to better understand the discoloration cases.

I’m also curious whether the newer melamine-coated models actually include a standardized UV protection layer or if there are differences.

Has anyone found more detailed information or manufacturer specifications on this?

According to my research, IKEA uses a UV-stabilized layer on melamine-coated surfaces that significantly reduces discoloration caused by sunlight.

However, there are variations in thickness and composition depending on the model and year of manufacture.

This means that newer models are generally more durable, but completely preventing discoloration is not guaranteed.

This brings me to another important point: proper maintenance.

In addition to the material, regular cleaning with mild cleaners and avoiding harsh chemicals can extend the shelf’s lifespan without visible damage.

Once discoloration has started, oily treatments or home remedies rarely help. Prevention is more effective in this case.
