Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into discoloration issues with IKEA BILLY bookcases and would like to know: which BILLY models are particularly prone to such discoloration?
I have noticed that some versions and surface finishes develop stains or color changes over time, especially when placed near windows or subjected to frequent use. I am interested to find out if there are specific models or color variants that are known to be more affected due to the materials or coatings used.
If anyone has experience with different BILLY models that are more or less susceptible, could you please share details about the model, age, and location of use? I am mainly looking for reliable information so I can make an informed decision for my next purchase. Thanks in advance!

Which BILLY models are particularly prone to discoloration?Models with white film laminate (BILLY white satin film laminate) are especially susceptible to yellowing or browning when exposed to direct sunlight. This effect is due to the UV sensitivity of the laminate.
Real wood veneer versions tend to show less discoloration, with natural aging of the wood being more noticeable instead.
In general, I recommend choosing BILLY shelves with a melamine resin coating, as these show significantly less color change, even with extended sun exposure.
In addition to zarJody68:
BILLY models with the "white high gloss" finish are also prone to yellowing. This especially occurs in kitchens, where steam and heat can cause changes to the surface.
The reason lies in the paint used, which can react to moisture and temperature fluctuations.
A tip: If possible, ensure regular ventilation and indirect sunlight.

The models with white foil coating (BILLY white foil matte) tend to develop yellow or brown discoloration, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. This is an important point. Additionally, I would like to add that discoloration can also be caused by external factors such as nicotine, dust, or food residues.
In particular, in households with many children or near cooking areas, it is advisable to clean the shelves regularly and avoid placing them too close to hot or heavily used spots.
Although the foil surfaces are easy to maintain, they are more sensitive to dirt, which can then appear as discoloration.
One more note: Older BILLY models (before 2010) sometimes had a thinner foil coating, which can accelerate discoloration. Recently, the material has become more durable, but not all versions are equally resistant.
If possible, check the batch numbers or read the manufacturer’s information.
