Hello everyone, I would like to know from you: Which Billy models from IKEA are especially easy to assemble? I am particularly interested in versions where the assembly is as straightforward as possible and can be completed quickly by DIY beginners. It would be great if you could share your experiences, especially whether there are any common pitfalls with certain models or if some versions can even be assembled completely without tools. Thanks in advance for your input!
Regarding seniors or very simple assembly: The BILLY models are generally not designed for tool-free assembly; screws and wall anchors are always required. However, the model without doors is recommended due to its lower assembly effort. Additionally, there are supplementary clamp systems for shelves that are relatively easy to use. If maximum simplicity is the goal, I would suggest sticking with the standard BILLY and avoiding doors or special features.
I often assemble BILLY: The simplest option remains the classic 80x28x202 cm (31½x11x79½ inches) version without doors. There is little that can go wrong with this. The back panel is usually just slotted in or nailed, which is quick. It’s best to use a cordless drill, as it makes the process easier.

Good question! I was a bit overwhelmed at the beginning too.I can totally relate! Back then, I also wondered if I could manage it on my own. In the end, it helped not to aim for perfection but to take it step by step. 🙂 For anyone feeling unsure: practice makes perfect, and the BILLY models without many extras are a good place to start. It feels great when you realize you can succeed despite earlier doubts.
One more tip: If you choose models with doors, make sure to attach the doors only at the very end. It often helps to assemble the entire shelving unit without the doors first to test its stability. This way, you avoid frustration if you need to access the screws without the doors being in the way. Also, if someone frequently moves the shelving unit, the versions without doors are much more flexible.
