I would like to take a more detailed look at the topic "Which Billy models are better suited for the living room than for the office?"

The Billy series offers many variations, from classic shelving units to models with doors, as well as versions with drawers and special sizes. My main question is: Which of the existing Billy models would you consider more suitable for the living room?

I am particularly interested in features such as appearance, storage capacity, flexibility, and also size or presence in the room. In contrast, I would like to understand why some models are more appropriate for office use.

Perhaps you have experience with models that are less practical or stylistically fitting for an office but work well in a living area. So, the goal is a comparison and evaluation of the models based on their actual intended use and room design. Looking forward to your insights.

Or do you consider such combinations (open shelving + drawers) really practical for both living spaces?

I would say yes! In the living room, it creates a little secret spot for the remote control and magazines – keeping everything tidy and manageable in daily life. In the office, drawers provide the necessary order among piles of documents and coffee cups 😉.

I think the combination of an open Billy shelf and drawers is perfect because it offers both flexibility and organization. In the living room, you can display books openly, while the drawers hold small items. Office? Sure, as long as the drawers stay tidy, there’s no problem with that.

I maintain that Billy and its drawers are simply "too basic" for an office because modern workspaces need to offer more modularity.

However, that doesn't mean they can't be great for the living room.

If in doubt, I recommend using colorful or open boxes that break the Billy charm.

Thank you for the interesting insights!

Finally, I am curious if you have any specific recommendations regarding the size of the Billy models for living room setups in terms of room design?

For example: Which dimensions appear more homely and harmonious, and which shelf depth or height would be more suitable for an office?

In the living room, wider and lower models (e.g., 80–106 cm (31–42 inches) wide, 112–123 cm (44–48 inches) high) tend to create a more comfortable atmosphere and integrate better with various types of furniture. A shelf depth of 28 cm (11 inches) is usually sufficient. Office designs benefit from a taller surface area and a depth closer to 40 cm (16 inches) to provide additional storage and document space.

That matches my experience: Living room shelves should not be too tall, otherwise they appear bulky. Office shelving can be taller to accommodate folders efficiently.
