ᐅ What assembly tips can help simplify the connection of multiple Ikea PLATSA units?

Hello everyone, I am currently planning to combine several Ikea Platsa modules into a large storage system and am looking for practical assembly tips that truly make connecting the modules easier. I’m especially interested in how to join the modules securely and flush with each other, without the connections becoming wobbly or unattractive later on. Are there any proven techniques for the correct assembly order, suitable tools, or tricks to install the connection parts (e.g., screws, dowels, connector plates) more easily and precisely? What mistakes should definitely be avoided to prevent having to make corrections afterward? I would really appreciate detailed experiences or small tips that help optimize the assembly process when working with multiple PLATSA modules.

I recommend thoroughly cleaning the surface of the modules before installation. Dust or debris in the joint area can affect the fit and lead to uneven gaps.

The sequence matters a lot: First, assemble all modules completely on their own, especially the side walls and floors.

This is a key point. Additionally, it’s important to pay attention to the type of attachment used on the wall—especially when stacking multiple modules on top of each other. Did you plan to secure the entire structure to the wall? That greatly increases stability.

Also: Have you considered how much weight the modules will need to support in the end? Not all types of connections carry loads equally well; the choice of screws and brackets makes a noticeable difference.

Thanks for the responses so far, really helpful!

A few clarifications: I am building four identical Platsa modules side by side horizontally, not stacked vertically. I plan to install the back panels at the end, as I want to make minor adjustments during assembly. The modules haven’t been delivered yet, but I’m already thinking about how to organize the work most efficiently.

Do you have any tips for handling the fasteners? Especially the bolts seem a bit fiddly without any tools. Are there specific tools or techniques that make inserting them easier?

And one more question about wall mounting: Are the supplied wall anchors sufficient for multiple connected modules, or should additional solutions be planned here?

Yes, inserting the bolts can be tricky. I often use a small plier with a rubber grip to get a better hold and apply pressure more easily. However, I advise against forcing the bolts in, to avoid damaging the holes. Lightly pre-drilling with the correct drill bit (not too deep) can make insertion easier, but only if the fit is too tight.

Regarding wall mounting: When installing several modules side by side, it’s usually sufficient to use the supplied wall anchors at multiple points. It’s important that the wall itself is load-bearing (e.g., reinforced concrete or a structural wall). For drywall, I recommend special anchors with higher load distribution. Additionally, you can mount a continuous strip behind the modules to secure them more firmly to the wall and to simplify later adjustments.

For the bolts, a suitable torque attachment on a cordless drill helps to screw them in precisely and with enough pressure. Doing it by hand takes a long time and is fiddly.

There’s no problem with that if you install the modules loosely. The back panels often provide the correct pressure once you attach them.
