Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the assembly of an IKEA Metod kitchen island and have already read quite a bit of the installation instructions. However, I am interested in which specific assembly tips have been particularly helpful to others when putting together Metod kitchen islands, especially regarding stability and alignment. What practical tricks and techniques do you use during planning and assembly? The combination of carcasses, countertop, and potential plinths seems somewhat complex to me, and I am wondering how to avoid common pitfalls.

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hi Elviszar43,

When assembling the IKEA Metod kitchen island, using a precise level and ensuring the floor alignment is accurate are really crucial. Especially with the island, the floor might not be completely even. I use adjustable feet here to align the cabinet units exactly in height.

It is also important to install the panels and countertops only at the very end, so you can still make small adjustments to the cabinet units.

Make sure to screw the individual modules together at a perfect right angle—otherwise, doors or drawers may rub or not close properly later.

Small helpers like connector fittings with guiding aids can make the work a lot easier. And don’t forget to allow enough time for the alignment, as this often isn’t obvious at first glance.

- Use adjustable feet for height adjustment.
- Work on the carcasses first, then on the countertop.
- Screw the modules together at a right angle.
- Check with a spirit level.

For the installation of IKEA Metod kitchen islands, I recommend the following points that have proven helpful in practice:

- Preparation: Sort all individual parts and check for completeness before starting assembly.
- Floor check: Use a digital spirit level to identify any unevenness.
- Install adjustable feet only on the lower cabinet units to allow for later adjustments.
- Connect the cabinet units firmly but not permanently, so small movements are still possible.
- Secure the countertop with special screws (e.g., from IKEA) to prevent deformation caused by stress.
- Have the work surface precisely cut to size before screwing it down; precision is especially important for island units.

It is also important to plan possible cable and pipe openings early if a sink or cooktop will be installed.

I will summarize the most important installation steps for the IKEA Metod kitchen island that are often overlooked:

1. Preparation:
- Check all carcasses for surface defects and damage.
- Lay out the countertop separately and check for warping.

2. Floor leveling:
- Check the floor with a digital spirit level.
- Fully extend the adjustable feet to allow maximum adjustment.

3. Assembling the carcasses:
- First, join the individual carcasses precisely at right angles and position them without final fastening.
- Tighten screws carefully to avoid deformation.

4. Intermediate check:
- Test doors and drawers for correct alignment.

5. Countertop:
- After aligning the carcasses, place the countertop and check its alignment.
- Secure the countertop with the supplied brackets or screws.

6. Final check:
- Attach baseboards and check their alignment.

Common mistakes:
- Screwing directly without adjustment leads to uneven modules.
- Installing countertops too early makes alignment difficult.

If you proceed step by step, it works very well.

Thanks for the helpful tips so far, especially the advice about checking the floor and installing the countertop late in the process sounds very practical.

From my own experience, I can add that when assembling a Metod kitchen island, it’s important not to rush, as the frustration that comes from misaligned parts can disrupt the entire process.

I personally had inserted a screw incorrectly and had to completely readjust everything hours later – a typical beginner’s mistake. My advice is definitely to schedule breaks to avoid mental stress.

That really helped me because I was able to make adjustments without having to take everything apart.
