Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a self-installation of an Ikea Metod kitchen and am wondering which assembly materials are truly the most important. The installation manuals provide an overview, but for me the question is a bit more complex:

Which assembly materials—such as screws, wall anchors, connectors, brackets, or similar—are really essential for a stable and durable construction with Metod kitchens?

Are there any practical experiences regarding which parts require particular attention to quality, or which materials should be supplemented or replaced to ensure long-lasting stability and functionality?

I look forward to your well-founded assessments and any tips on what has proven reliable in everyday use or should be better avoided.

Thanks in advance!

Basically, the following assembly materials are most important for Ikea Metod kitchens:

- Cam connectors (cam locks): They provide a secure connection between cabinet parts and must be fitted precisely; otherwise, stability is compromised.
- Angle brackets and metal brackets: Essential for mounting to the wall or beneath countertops, as they support the weight.
- Screws with plastic anchors: Important for wall mounting, as they ensure the cabinets stay firmly in place.
- Shelf supports and flap fittings: Securely hold the shelves in position.

Special attention is required when using high-quality screws and anchors for wall mounting because the entire structure’s weight rests on them. Cheap anchors can lose their grip over time.

Additionally, it is recommended not to reuse the supplied connectors multiple times, as they may wear out and reduce the strength of the connection. If possible, replacement parts from IKEA or suitable spares from reliable manufacturers should be used.

This ensures a secure installation and long-lasting functionality.

Hello Samolu,

I completely understand your question, as the choice and quality of assembly materials greatly affect the success of installing a Metod kitchen. Here is a more detailed overview of what I would recommend:

1. Cam connectors (also known as cam locks)
- They join the side panels of the carcasses together.
- Tip: Make sure the ridges fully engage. If the connector feels stiff or of poor quality, it’s better to replace it.

2. Dowels (wood dowels and plastic dowels)
- Especially important for joining wooden parts and for wall mounting.
- Tip: For wall fastening, it’s better to use metal expansion anchors or alternatives with better grip, especially in drywall.

3. Metal brackets (wall brackets, corner brackets)
- They secure the cabinets against tipping and provide extra stability.
- Tip: These should always be installed flush and under tension.

4. Screws (pan-head screws and other types)
- Quality and correct fit are essential.
- Tip: Use stainless steel screws for connecting countertops.

5. Shelf supports
- These carry the weight of the shelves.
- Tip: Depending on the expected load, you can choose sturdy plastic or metal options.

In summary, I would recommend paying special attention to the quality of the wall fixings and the connections between the carcass parts. In my experience, these points are the weak spots with Metod.

If you have questions about specific types of fittings, I’m happy to help.

I can definitely confirm that, because with my first Metod kitchen, I had problems when I used standard anchors on a less-than-ideal wall. After a while, the cabinets were no longer securely attached.

For me, that was a real challenge since I wasn’t entirely confident about choosing the right hardware.

From experience: I would definitely place special emphasis on the wall mounting and the anchors and screws used for it. It’s better to invest in good-quality mounting materials than to risk unstable cabinets or a wobbly setup in the end.

One question for everyone: Are there any particularly recommended types of anchors you use for drywall (plasterboard) walls with Metod kitchens?

I would appreciate any further tips so that I can approach the next installation with more confidence.
