Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into installation errors with IKEA Billy bookcases and would like to start a discussion about which mistakes occur most frequently and why these happen particularly with the Billy series.
You often hear about uneven shelves, unstable connector joints, and problems with the dowels. However, I am also interested in technical details, such as incorrect drilling or wrong screw assignments, which are often overlooked.
Has anyone systematically gathered experience regarding which errors are most common and problematic? Any tips on how to avoid these issues would also be very helpful.
Looking forward to your answers!

Exactly! And if you keep that in mind, you’ll enjoy your shelf a lot.
A tip from me: You can also secure the back panel with nails if the screws aren’t perfectly aligned. This will make it hold better and wobble less. 🙂

Precise drilling, using the right parts, and correctly aligning the back panel are the most important points.

A common mistake is also the incorrect installation of cam lock fasteners. If they are not properly secured, the connection will be loose.
Additionally, when screwing in the shelf supports, make sure they are perfectly horizontal, otherwise the shelves will be crooked in the end.

Or do you accept that risk to improve stability? Are there any official guidelines from IKEA regarding this?
Basically, it would be preferable if you didn’t have to take such measures to avoid mistakes in the first place.

This is understandable for warranty and safety reasons. However, additional fixing with small nails or double-sided tape is a common practice among DIY enthusiasts for older Billy bookcases.
I recommend making such adjustments only if the shelf is no longer intended to be returned.
